Things you might not know about Nor'easter | Outdoor Gear and ...

Posted by Beth Marchand on 17, September 2011 with

I spend a LOT of time working with NE2C Productions and my peers at Eastern Mountain Sports on Nor?easter planning. You know the dates (Sept 23-25), the location (Waterfront Park, Burlington VT), the headliners (rjd2, G.Love&Special Sauce, Okkervil River), the website (noreaster.ems.com). Here is a?random compilation of things that I?m excited for that you might not heard of yet? in no particular order, here they are!

1. Paddling is the newest Nor?easter sport! You can take a sunset (or sunrise) paddle on Lake Champlain! Just sign up at the Eastern Mountain Sports tent and our Kayak School will take you out on the lake for a couple of hours of beauty and fun. Don?t want to spend that much time out? We?ll have kayak demos and stand-up paddle board clinics.?Having never paddled Lake Champlain, you can bet I?ll be trying to squeeze this in!

2. Killer t?s.. This year?s batch of Nor?easter t-shirt graphics?might just be the best! Stop by the Nor?eastore (hehe) and meet our t-shirt designer, Mike McCooey (http://www.youtube.com/easternmntnsports#p/a/u/2/_PCq-J2zbrg), who will be hanging out at the t-shirt table. He loves feedback and is a good guy to hang with! Here?s just one of the designs you will see?

3. Stunts and demos? Mike Steidley is doing a couple of mountain bike trials demos on Friday and Saturday. He?s a 9x National Champion and Professional Trials, Freeride, and Stunt Rider, and a good friend of Eastern Mountain Sports. Being one of those people who likes keeping my feet (and wheels) on the ground, this type of demo just astounds me? I?ve seen him jump on boxes, rails, the top of a trailer, over a person? great entertainment! Check him out at www.mikesteidley.com?or stop by Nor?easter!

4. Throwing down and giving back? We?ve got not just one, but FOUR fundraisers going on? no pressure, just options. Something as simple as buying a ticket to Nor?easter helps out! And, at a couple of booths and events, there?ll be additional opportunities to help us make a difference. Nor?easter?efforts are focusing on?the Friends of the Island Line Trail (through a portion of sales at the Eastern Mountain Sports in BVT 9/17 ? 9/25) and?the VT Irene Flood Relief fund and VT Youth Conservation Corps (through the Smartwool Ridiculissima and an on-site silent auction at EcoFest). You?ll also find opportunities to support First Descent and Project Kili-Porters. Stop by, check it out, and thank you in advance for helping us make a difference to the?community around us!

5. Festival Curation? If you?ve been to Nor?easter in the past, you?ll want to take a look at the schedule at www.noreaster.ems.com. We?re shaking it up! There?s a lot you?ll miss if you come Friday at 6 and leave Sunday at 9am? from qualifiers for The North Face Open (UBC Pro Tour Finale), to LOADS of music, to trials demos (see above), the boys at NE2C have curated the festival like never before! (Ask Pete Ward about curating a festival?) But have no fear ? if schedules are such that Friday night to Sunday morning is your gig, rest assued that?s our favorite part of the festival schedule!!

6. The food.. ah, the food. The nature of the beast is that I?m usually at Nor?easter from early early am to past the end of the last band? Food is somewhat critical to that schedule. This year, I?m beyond excited about the menu. No lame hamburger or $20 burrito here! The local restaurants are stepping up to bring taste, variety, and local flavor. Bring on the crepes!

7. Bike, bike, and more bike. You know about Cyclocross, I talked about Mike?s demos, but there?s more! (So much I have to bullet point it?)

  • Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at noon we?ll be heading out on a group road ride. All abilities welcome, just show up with a bike and helmet!
  • Don?t have a bike? Local Motion is running ride share all weekend!
  • Want to ride AND make a difference? Check out http://world.350.org/vermont/?- there?s a group meeting at Waterfront Park on Saturday and biking to Montpelier for the Moving Planet rally at the State House.
  • Want to learn some basic tips for keeping your bike maintained and safe? Stop by and talk to the Eastern Mountain Sports bike tech crew ? they?ll be wrenching at the ?Cross race on Saturday, and hanging out Sunday at our tent.
  • And, speaking of bike techs, Mike Allen is biking 700 miles from PA to Nor?easter! Follow his ride at http://mytravelstothenoreaster2011.blogspot.com/.

8. For the first time in Nor?easter history, we are offering climbing clinics ON the UBC wall. Yes, that?s right, you too can climb on the same wall that the pro climbers compete on!

I?m going to stop there, I can?t give away ALL our secrets? Bottom line, we?re pumped on everything that?s going on at Nor?easter this year. Come check it out and you never know what you?ll find!
