HOUSTON ? A federal judge has told a Houston jury to continue deliberating after it wasn't able to reach a complete verdict in the trial of a government pilot accused of lying about hovering his helicopter over two would-be illegal immigrants in the Rio Grande before one of the men drowned.
Department of Homeland Security pilot James Peters is being tried on four counts of making false statements to authorities investigating the 2005 drowning.
The jury said Thursday it had decided on one count but was unable to reach a verdict on the others.
Officials say the force of the turbulence from the helicopter blades made one of the immigrants lose his grip on an inner tube.
Lawyers for Peters argued the pilot didn't lie to investigators.
