Anywhoo, I claim this discussion thread in the name of "HHH" (Dark Guild 1). Abandon all sanity yee who enter here!

First order of business, GUILD HISTORY!

What I mean by this is that I would like to work up a little background on not only the guild itself but its guildmembers. Stuff like how they joined, what there reputation is with the other guild members is, how much they love and respect their awesome and amazing guild master......

So lets get some discussion going! (all two of us -_-)

The guild has been around since it's founding 2 years ago by no other than The Shrouded Spellsetter himself! What this means is that we are a realitivly new guild (dark guild) on the block. Our members shall consist of the guildmaster himself and three others, NO MORE! (well maybe some more later on [BUT NO NPC's!]). In a later post I shall lay out some information on our Guild-House.

Also! Note that all (important) guild information will ultimately be placed into "The Shrouded Spellsetter"s Profile under Guild! But feel free to put some of your character's information pertaining to the guild in their profile!

Lastly! The guild name is currently "HHH" (for the story pertaining to the acronym, check the regular OOC), but it is subject to change if someone presents me with a better one! (until the start of the RP, or at least our start)

So, we are two years old, we are located in a medium sized town in Fein (neutrality is best when you want to play both sides) near the border (but we still like to get around). Up until now we have mostly been doing low ranking jobs for shady merchants (like sabotaging warehouses! Or scaring competitors! We once changed some labels on in-transit goods! Whoo!), slowly making a name for our-selfs (Cuz Black is a freakin' good PR guy {he bribes people alot [and is riding on his legacy]}). We have yet to do anything big (like an assassination or kidnapping), but all good things come in time! In fact, Black has just finished coming up with a job that will us put on the map of some very influential people in both Elden and Torin! (not to mention secure a crap-ton of gold)

So, thar's some information for yall, feel free to present some of your own origin's with "HHH" and discussion shall ensue!

He who has no sanity (Maybe a little.), has entered 'HHH' domain! It is I, Ansem Archlkan.

So, now to ponder up an amazing joining story for Loke, and how he totally hates reveres Black. (Or maybe just think he's awesome and all that jazz.) I could easily say he'd join for the evulz, or 'fun' in this case. But we want an epic tale of how each member came to be, and has earned his/her respect in HHH, therefore; Beer drinking contest. Money, and the fun you'll have teaching people to stop being an ass, and be civilized instead? (Not that what 'HHH' is doing is civilized...)

Okay, this is going to need some work. But really, how else would you figure a guy like Loke joining a Guild? Other then for fun, I mean.

that aside, I'd like to know what we did with those labels? Change the name; cucumbers, to 'Goblin willies'? *ahem* I'll ponder some more about Loke's joining, but he'd probably have joined when the guild was but a few weeks/months old. Hell, maybe he'd even be as awesome as to have met Black even before the guild was, well.. made. But that seems very unlikely. I'll leave you with this for now, and will inform you 'bout Loke's joining whenever I have a solid idea.

As the host of her own talk show in the '80s and a close friend of Clive Davis, Nikki Haskell got to know Whitney Houston when the singer was just beginning her career. While reeling from last weekend's shocking events, Haskell was gracious enough to speak with Spinner about the singer's early years, her struggles with addiction, why Bobby Brown was her "downfall" and the fact that someone supposed to be with Houston at all times, including in the bathroom, to prevent a tragedy like this.

How did you first meet Whitney?

I was just going over the funeral arrangement story with Clive. He is going to speak at the funeral and it's in the afternoon on Saturday. I was with [Whitney] a lot because of my friendship with Clive. I know nothing about her as a child, outside of the fact that I met her when she first started singing.

I met her originally through Dionne [Warwick, Houston's cousin]. She wasn't even Whitney Houston then, she was just a little girl. My friendship with her was really only because of my friendship with Clive. We saw her at music events -- every year she was at Clive's [Grammy] event and of course we always sat in close proximity and talked. I didn't speak to her on a daily basis. She was not one of my closest friends. She was just a woman that I knew, who I respected. Her singing ability was amazing. My time that I spent with her was all related to her career. It wasn't like we were two girls socializing.

What was she like when you met her?

She was very shy. She was always very shy. This is just my opinion: Her shyness might have even been partially related to her drug problem. I think she had a fear of performing. She was a shy girl and she was very charming. She was adorable. She always had a big smile on her face and she was always very friendly to me and friendly to everyone.

I never found her to have any kind of an attitude. She wasn't really a diva like the other divas, you know what I mean? She didn't have diva scabs on her forehead. She was really nice, caring. I think that her dysfunctional relationship with Bobby Brown was her downfall. Her illustrious career became challenged during that period of time. One of her biggest problems was that she was a horrendously horrible smoker. She smoked cigarettes all day long. That's what really was part in parcel to her ruining her voice.

How, if at all, did you see her change over the years?

Not really, she was pretty much the same. You'd see these pictures of her in the magazines falling down -- I never saw that side of her. Whenever I saw her, she was always in rare form. She always looked great. She had great sense of style and taste, she was beautiful, she was in command of certain situations. I can't imagine how she could have died. She must have slipped under the water or something. She wasn't depressed, she wasn't on drugs. I was told there was supposed to be somebody with her at all times when she was in the bathroom, in the bathtub and everything.

How long was that kind of supervision in place?

I would think a while. She had pretty loyal family members and people around her at all times. She was very well protected. She should've been better protected.

I think it was due to the fact that when you're a performer, you have to have people around to protect you. Anyway, it's a sad day. The worst part about it is that I've just been playing her music over and over again and I've just been crying and crying. Her last album, 'I Look to You,' took five years to make. Even though I was not part in parcel to putting it together, I heard it. I heard all the songs and all the choices that Clive made. It was such a personal matter with him. The man is a total perfectionist. Clive is an amazing man -- he has big shoulders and you can lean on him. I think she went to him a lot during her trying times.

What were her interactions like with the other musical friends or members of her family?

Well, I was with her in England when she was with her daughter, Bobbi Kristina, when she performed on 'The X Factor.' I was with her when she was with her mother in Vegas when we went to the World Music Awards. I knew her mother quite well. She had a really great family, a very close-knit family. They tried to protect her as much as they could. You can only do so much. Clive is beside himself.

Somebody said something today that is not 100 percent wrong. They said, "It was just a matter of time." It's like Janis Joplin, or Michael Jackson, or Amy Winehouse. There is a predisposition for these things. People were always worried about Whitney. There were things in the paper every day about her. Everybody was always aware that she was walking on thin ice.

Was she like that when you met her?

No. It's interesting because every time I would see one of these stories, I would ask Clive, "Is this true? Is this true?" and he'd say, "No, this isn't true. I spoke to her and she's great." So I think a lot of stories just sort of became stories on their own. But the Bobby Brown thing, that was the kiss of death. The Bobby Brown relationship did her in. It set her up for this situation. Things like this don't just happen in one second. It's sad because no one in the world has ever had a voice like Whitney Houston and they never will. There will never be another Whitney Houston.

Added House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.): ?My initial reaction is, the Republicans caved because they believed that the public believes that we ought to move forward on this.?

In a surprising about-face, House GOP leaders said Monday that if conference committee negotiations fail, they?ll push an extension of the payroll tax cut through the end of this year without offsetting the cost . The temporary 2 percent tax cut, which benefits 160 million Americans and costs about $100 billion to extent through the end of the year, would be separated from unemployment insurance and the so-called doc fix, Republicans leaders said.

The back-up plan could come to the House floor as early as Wednesday.

Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Democrats would back the standalone payroll tax cut extension. At the same time, she called on a House-Senate conference committee to reach a deal by Friday on unemployment benefits and the so-called ?doc fix.?

If that doesn?t happen, Pelosi said GOP leaders should scrap the weeklong Presidents Day recess scheduled for next week.

Though House passage of a standalone payroll bill isn?t guaranteed, the Democrats? expected backing dramatically boosts its prospects.

The real guesswork starts once it reaches the Senate.

Schumer didn?t say whether Senate Democrats would support just the payroll tax cut separated from the other two provisions. He said the caucus is not ruling ?anything off the table? in terms getting the extension of unemployment insurance and the doc fix passed.

?In terms of revenues and in terms of mandatory cuts, there?s ample room to get these things done,? Schumer said, who also said renewing jobless benefits without paying for it was also an option.

Senate Democrats also hinted tax extenders such as a research and development tax credit and mass transit benefits could be included in the final deal.

But Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) cautioned that negotiators still have to resolve other sticking points like reforms to the unemployment insurance program proposed by Republicans. Those changes include a requirement that all recipients undergo a GED program in order to receive benefits, and allowing states to mandate drug screening.

?I don?t think it changes any of the other equations here other than the offset politics,? Cardin said.

Earlier Tuesday, President Barack Obama noted ?hopeful signs? in Congress regarding passage of the extension, but still urged the public to pressure lawmakers.

?You can?t take anything for granted here in Washington,? Obama said Tuesday. ?Until you see me sign this thing, you?ve got to keep on speaking up.?

Public Speaking (and Book Promotion) For Introverts | Psychology ...

My fellow Texas blogger, Sophia Dembling, recently wrote a wonderful post about the challenges of book promotion for introverts. I loved reading her interviews with the writers and discovering kindred souls because I, too, am an introvert and I also find book promotion the most challenging part of the writing process.? But anyone who wants to succeed as a writer (or in many professions) will need to develop stronger self-promotion skills. And as disheartening as it may be to introverts, public speaking can be one of the best ways to promote and sell yourself (and your book).

I've heard there are studies that say public speaking is the #1 fear for most people-- even higher than the fear of death. Now I have to believe that if those people were really put to the challenge, as in "Speak or die!", they would likely speak, but who am I to argue with "studies" or what "they" say.

For me, public speaking has gone from being something which filled me with anxiety and all its wonderful symptoms (see a funny Don Knotts version here) to one of my favorite activities. I now regularly speak as a consultant or trainer.? I seldom receive negative feedback (although I still hyper-focus on that one reviewer who wasn't so thrilled...) and I've learned that anxiety can be overcome-- or at least ignored. Public speaking is a skill introverts can develop, and maybe even learn to enjoy.

So here are 10 tips that have worked for me, and I hope you will find helpful:

2. Find a way to make your content interesting.? Compelling content or information can take the audience's attention off the speaker. Find creative ways to provide information-- something better than bullet points on a PowerPoint.? If you are bored, your audience will be also. What are the most interesting features of your writing? Is it a compelling character, an intricate plot, or your cure for a problem? Focus in on that one area and let the audience in on why you find it so compelling. Don't try to encapsulate the whole book or story. Inspire them to read your book to learn the rest.

3. Intersperse interesting stories throughout your talk. Honing your storytelling skills is a great way to improve your speeches. Somehow when you're telling a story it's no longer about "you" and you can get lost in the story yourself. Think of examples from your work, family, or friends. I personally like Native American or Zen type stories that have a moral or serve as a metaphor to my topic. People remember stories, and stories naturally give you a connection to your audience.

4. Watch and learn from stand-up comedians. Particularly the successful and polished ones like Jay Leno, David Letterman, Wanda Sykes, or Ellen DeGeneres. Don't just enjoy their jokes-- study them like you would a master teacher. Listen to their phrasing, how they pause or accent certain words.? Notice what they do when a joke bombs (hint: they don't fall apart or get upset-- at least not in public), and take note of interesting or funny lines that might relate to the topic of your talk.

I never try to tell a joke-- I suspect that would quickly bomb. Rather, I'll quote a comedian, as in, "I once heard Jerry Seinfeld talk about running magazines. He said he could understand the value of such magazines for the first issue or two. You could read articles about the shoes to buy or where to run. But, shouldn't the third issue or so just say ?Run!'" By telling the joke like a story you engage the audience, create a humorous intro to your topic (mine fits in with a goal-setting session), but you don't run the risk of telling a joke and having crickets in the background. If no one laughs it's OK. You can always blame Jerry Seinfeld.

5. Use as many notes as you need. When I first started speaking, I would draft out my entire talk. Now I use a basic list of keywords to keep me on topic, and I use colored markers to write jokes or story ideas in the margin. I find too many notes distracting and hard to read when I'm trying to focus on my audience. If I had index cards, I just know they would fall on the floor at some point. So use what will make you most comfortable when you speak, and for some of you, a full script might be most comforting.

6. Practice. I know this sounds obvious, but give your speech in the car as you're driving to work. Practice in the shower. The more you know your material and the more practiced you are at delivering it, the easier it will be. Talk your ideas out with a friend or spouse. I built up my skills by teaching. My students inspire me to be creative and look for ways to keep them engaged.

7. Talk to the friendly faces and do your best to ignore the cranky ones. Facial expressions can be deceiving.? I've had people who looked angry (crossed arms and all) during my talks come up later and thank me for a great presentation.? By the way, picturing your audience nude or in their underwear (a common recommendation to nervous speakers) never worked for me. It just made me feel icky.

Being yourself is a great way to genuinely connect with your audience.

9. Identify your sales personality. I don't do well when I think I'm "selling." I'm reminded of a wonderful episode of the Bob Newhart Show-- Bob played a psychologist trying to help a client who was an unsuccessful salesman. He asked the client to demonstrate his sales technique. It turned out the guy just stood on the porch for a few minutes and never rang the doorbell. Chemo During Pregnancy Doesn't Seem to Harm Baby (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Feb. 9 (HealthDay News) -- A new study finds that the babies of women who had chemotherapy while pregnant aren't at higher risk for a variety of medical disorders, a sign that the treatment should be safe for the fetus in most instances.

There's a caveat: babies born to pregnant women who had chemotherapy were more likely to be born prematurely, potentially putting them at risk for impaired brain development, which can cause problems with memory, thinking and learning skills.

Still, the findings are "very good news," said maternal-fetal medicine specialist Dr. Elyce Cardonick, who wrote a commentary accompanying the study.

"No pregnant woman likes to choose between treating themselves and protecting the baby," said Cardonick, who works at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University in Camden, N.J. "They don't have to choose. By making themselves healthy, they're helping the baby."

An estimated one in 1,000 pregnant women have cancer, Cardonick said. In some cases, doctors recommend that the women undergo abortions. But chemotherapy is an option.

Typically, doctors only treat the women outside the early stages of pregnancy and use older drugs that are "tried and true," Cardonick said.

Could chemotherapy harm the developing fetus? Previous research has suggested it won't, but researchers led by Dr. Frederic Amant, a gynecologic oncologist and assistant professor at Katholieke Universiteit in Leuven, Belgium, sought to understand whether the cancer treatment might affect babies after they are born.

In the new study, the researchers examined medical records and test results of 70 children whose pregnant mothers underwent chemotherapy. The children were followed for an average of 22 months and up to 18 years.

"The study is unique since this is the first time children were extensively examined over the long term," Amant said.

The investigators found that the children weren't at higher risk of heart, hearing or nervous system disorders, or general health and growth problems.

As to why the chemotherapy drugs do not reach the fetus and cause harm, Amant said the placenta acts like a filter, keeping most of the medications away from the fetus. Also, doctors avoid chemotherapy in the first trimester, when organs are in the early stages of development and especially vulnerable, Amant added.

The study is one of a series of articles about pregnant women and cancer published online Feb. 10 in The Lancet Oncology.

The other articles published in this issue report that:

• The current trend in medicine is to allow pregnancies to continue in women diagnosed with cervical or ovarian cancer. However, chemotherapy must not be used in the first eight weeks, and the pregnancies come with risks.
• Pregnant women with breast cancer can undergo both surgery and chemotherapy, all with the aim of a full-term pregnancy. The mother's disease outcome would not be improved by terminating the pregnancy.
• Blood cancer can cause complications in pregnant women, such as blood clots, that may lead to advice to terminate the pregnancy at an early stage to protect the health of the mother. But women in later stages of pregnancy may find it feasible to undergo cancer treatment while preserving the pregnancy.

Iran arrests several on links to BBC Farsi service

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iranian authorities have arrested several people over alleged links to the British Broadcasting Corporation's Farsi-language service, Iran's semiofficial Mehr news agency reported Monday.

The report said they produced content and reported to the BBC. It said they facilitated training and hiring of some Iranian journalists and arranged trips abroad for them.

It quoted an unnamed official as saying they were active since 2009. It did not name them or say how many were arrested.

In London, the BBC said in a statement that the report "should be of deep concern to all those who believe in a free and independent media." The British broadcaster said it has "no BBC Persian staff members or stringers working inside Iran."

In October, Iran released two filmmakers who were in jail on similar charges.

Tehran has accused the BBC of operating as a cover for British intelligence and of hosting Iranian dissidents.

Last week the BBC accused Iran of intimidating staff members of its Persian service by slandering them and arresting relatives.
