Asian stocks trim losses, Italian auction looms (Reuters)

SINGAPORE (Reuters) ? Asian stocks slipped on Thursday on weakness in the U.S. and European share markets and caution ahead of an Italian debt sale, though year-end window dressing of portfolios by some traders helped trim losses.

European shares are expected to inch higher, reversing some of the previous session's losses, with cautiousness ahead of the key Italian debt auction by Italy seen limiting the gains.

Spreadbetters expect London's FTSE (.FTSE) to open up 0.04 percent, Frankfurt's DAX (.GDAXI) to open up 0.3 percent, and Paris' CAC 40 (.FCHI) to open up 0.3 percent.

The euro extended losses against the dollar to near a one-year low, and a 10-year low against the yen, while the sell-off in stocks and a firm U.S. currency helped crude oil snap a six-session rally and kept gold prices near a three-month low.

The Nikkei (.N225) ended 0.3 percent lower, recouping some of its 1.1 percent intraday loss. The MSCI ex-Japan Asia Pacific index (.MIAPJ0000PUS) also shed 0.3 percent, weighed down by consumer and material stocks. Both indexes look set to be down about 18 percent during 2011.

Traders said Italy's sale of up to 8.5 billion euros ($11 billion) of debt later on Thursday will provide further cues for risky assets.

The auction is seen as the first test of banks' willingness to buy longer-term sovereign debt with the nearly 500 billion euros they borrowed last week from the European Central Bank.

While Italy's short-term funding costs halved at an auction on Wednesday, market players are worried that thin volumes prevalent across markets near the end of the year could complicate its efforts to sell longer-dated bonds.

"If it goes well, it's an indication that, one, yield is coming down, so the cost of funding is falling for the Italian government," said Martin Lakos, division director at Macquarie Private Wealth.

"And, two, if there's demand for the paper, that's a sign of confidence, which is what the market's in real need of."

EURO, OIL, GOLD SLIP

The euro weakened in Asia, pressured by stop-loss selling from Japanese retail investors as well as some offloading by exporters, with moves amplified in poor year-end liquidity and traders said the currency is likely to stay vulnerable.

The single currency hit $1.2887, moving closer to its 2011 trough of $1.2860 on January 10. Against the yen, the euro skidded to a 10-year trough around 100.70, before steadying at 100.88.

At 0615 GMT, the euro traded at 1.2926 versus the dollar and 100.47 versus the yen.

"Nobody sees anything on the horizon that could be mildly positive for the euro," said Rob Ryan, FX strategist for BNP Paribas in Singapore.

The one factor that may lend the euro some support is market positioning, which is already tilted heavily toward being short the euro, Ryan said, adding that another is the potential for fund repatriation by European players.

Crude oil, which had gained for six sessions on heightened supply worries after Iran threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz, eased as traders viewed the threat as rhetoric.

"A big increase in U.S. crude oil stocks and the falling euro against the dollar are the main pressure points for the market at the moment," said Ken Hasegawa, a derivatives manager with brokerage Newedge in Tokyo.

"We also had six consecutive days gaining in the oil market, so it is not strange to see some profit-taking from these sharp gains."

Brent eased three cents to $107.53 a barrel by 0207 GMT, adding to a loss of nearly $2 the day before.

Gold wallowed near a three-month low on Thursday, remaining under pressure due to a firm dollar, while investors fretted over the Italian bond auction.

Spot gold edged down 0.3 percent to $1,550.90 an ounce by 0022 GMT, on course for an 11-percent decline in December. It hit a three-month low of $1,549.24 in the previous session.

China Mengniu Dairy destroys contaminated milk

DBR Staff Writer Published 28 December 2011

China Mengniu Dairy has destroyed milk and products after the government's quality watchdog, the General Administration of Quality Supervision Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), found elevated levels of a carcinogen in a batch of its milk.

The Inner Mongolia-based dairy producer said that AQSIQ testers conducted a random check at one of its plants in Meishan, in the southwestern province of Sichuan, and found excessive aflatoxin - a substance that can cause liver cancer.

The company spokesman Lu Jianjun said cattle that had eaten rotting, mildewed hay produced milk with excess levels of the chemical aflatoxin, reported wsj.com.

"Mengniu plans to increase oversight of its suppliers to ensure that cattle feed is properly stored and doesn't collect mildew. We plan to help farmers more in the future to prevent future incidents," Lu said.

5 Best Candidates Not Named Romeo Crennel To Coach the Chiefs in 2012

Fisher is a viable option to be the next Chiefs head coach for a number of reasons.

First of all, he has 16 years of NFL head coaching experience in the past, all with the Tennessee Titans organization.

He also is a proven, winning coach as well, having gone 146-120 during his time with that franchise.

Fisher could become KC's next HC at the right price, as long he would be willing to relinquish a little control at that position.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Republicans in search of their party's presidential nomination are returning to campaign mode in Iowa after a brief Christmas respite.

Rick Santorum planned a Monday hunting trip with conservatives in Iowa and Mitt Romney is phoning supporters.

With just a week until Iowa holds its leadoff caucuses and many voters still undecided, the final push ahead of the Jan. 3 contests was heading into a critical time. Campaigns planned new television ads and phone calls to persuade holdout caucusgoers still weighing options.

Romney, Rep. Michele Bachmann, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich all scheduled bus tours to start this week. Rep. Ron Paul, who has built what may be the strongest political machine in the state, is also set to return later this week.

Ex-`Saturday Night Live' writer Joe Bodolai dies (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Former "Saturday Night Live" writer Joseph Bodolai has committed suicide in a Hollywood hotel room, the Los Angeles coroner's office said Tuesday.

Coroner's office spokesman Craig Harvey said room service staff found the body of the 63-year-old Bodolai at 1:30 p.m. Monday in a room at Hollywood's Re-Tan Hotel. He checked into the hotel Dec. 19.

Harvey said Bodolai drank a mixture of Gatorade and antifreeze. The death, first reported by celebrity website TMZ, has been ruled a suicide.

Besides writing on 20 episodes of "Saturday Night Live" in 1981 and 1982, Bodolai was the TV producer for 20 episodes of "The Kids in the Hall" Canadian sketch comedy troupe.

Police Cmdr. Andrew Smith said there was no suicide note, however Bodolai apparently foreshadowed his suicide online.

The Los Angeles Times cited a lengthy post published Friday on a WordPress blog that appears to be registered to Bodolai. It was titled "If This Were Your Last Day Alive, What Would You Do?" and included Bodolai's accomplishments and regrets.

A message on the Twitter account (at)joebodolai said "Goodbye" and had a link to the blog.

The Associated Press could not independently verify the authenticity of the online posts.

92% Arthur Christmas

When a Christmas gift - a bike - accidentally goes undelivered to a little girl, Santa's son Arthur takes the initiative to solve the problem. Arthur Christmas is a joint venture between Sony Pictures Animation and Aardman Animations, the British studio known for Wallace and Gromit. Cold, charmless Christmas movie radiates scarcely any tradition or warmth. I didn't realize the classic tale of Santa Claus needed to be re-written for contemporary audiences but that's what we're presented with here. It's about as captivating as a lump of coal.Arthur Christmas is an overly simplified tale aimed exclusively at very young children. When you get right down to it, the entire plot concerns the delivery of one package. That's hardly a story to excite the senses. There's plenty of colorful, eye popping visuals, however. It's slick and frantically paced but very little of it engenders any sort of tenderness. All of the hyperactivity actually gave me a headache. Additionally the high caliber British cast (James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie, Jim Broadbent, Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton) have been instructed to shout all of their lines as if that would makes their voice performances funnier. That doesn't work in bad sitcoms and it doesn't work here. It's not all wretched. There's a sexually ambiguous little elf named Bryony who is a peculiar gift-wrapping obsessive. She/He/It is kind of amusing. But as for the rest of it, I found this frantic exercise extremely lacking in Christmas spirit.

What candidate is most likely to drop out before Florida primary?

Presidential primary history tells us that there is little chance that the all seven of the remaining Republican candidates running for the White House will make it to Florida?s Jan. 31 presidential primary.

In 2008, the much-hyped Fred Thompson, a former U.S. Senator from Tennessee, flamed out a week before Florida?s primary after finishing well back in South Carolina?s pivotal primary. And lesser known long shot Duncan Hunter packed it in after finishing dead last in the Nevada caucus before Florida voted.

That knocked the Republican field from eight to six candidates by the time the GOP rolled into the Sunshine state. Rudy Giuliani?s Florida or bust strategy came to an inglorious end after his disappointing finish here.

So who are the candidates most likely to be gone by the time Florida votes this time?

Here?s my list, ranked from most likely to least likely to drop out before Florida Republicans go to the polls on Jan. 31.

1. Rick Santorum: The former Pennsylvania senator has everything riding on Iowa. He?s got at least 13 paid staffers in Iowa, according to Campaigns & Elections magazine. That?s more than any of the other contenders.

Santorum is trying to tap the Evangelical base that helped deliver Iowa to surprise 2008 caucus winner Mike Huckabee. If Santorum does not finish in the top three in Iowa, he may not have the money to get much further.

And the polls don?t look good for him. Most of the polls coming out of Iowa have him still in the single digits, battling to stay out of last place with Jon Huntsman.

2. Jon Huntsman: While Santorum has everything riding on Iowa, the former Utah governor has his fate dependent on New Hampshire. Huntsman has 13 paid staffers in the Granite State, and has his national headquarters there. No other candidates have more than 10 paid staffers.

Huntsman needs a big showing in New Hampshire, yet polls show he is still struggling to break through. Most polls in New Hampshire this month show he?s hovering in fourth place.

3. Michele Bachmann: The Minnesota Congresswoman is close to being in the same position as Santorum, but has been polling better in Iowa since the summer. She has to do well because she barely has a pulse in New Hampshire where her entire staff quit earlier in the fall.

4. Rick Perry: The Texas governor is most resembling of Thompson from 2008. If Perry cannot crack top three in Iowa, New Hampshire or South Carolina, he?s likely toast. The polls right now suggest that it is very likely he will finish out of top three in all three of them.

The one thing that could keep him in longer is that he?s had more money in his campaign account than most of the other candidates. That could give him the ability to weather poor showings in Iowa and New Hampshire better than other candidates.

Long Sault Comes to Light Through Power of Community Partnerships

Long Sault residents have joined Upper Canada Village with their very own ?alight at night? display at the entrance to the Long Sault Parkway.

Long Sault residents have joined Upper Canada Village with their very own ?alight at night? display at the entrance to the Long Sault Parkway.

Long Sault residents have joined Upper Canada Village with their very own ?alight at night? display at the entrance to the Long Sault Parkway. A community partnership spearheaded by Andr? Pommier of Pommier Jewellers of Cornwall along with Paul Trottier of Jean Coutu Pharmacy and the St. Lawrence Parks Commission (SLPC) has resulted in the installation of Christmas lights on a sixty foot spruce tree.

Inspired by the community cooperation he saw between the Village of St. Jovite and Mont Tremblant, Pommier saw a similar opportunity for cooperation between Long Sault and Upper Canada Village. ?When you are travelling from Cornwall to visit Alight at Night, you pass through the villages and it creates a sense of being part of this great event. It builds the excitement and anticipation and really makes the community part of the event,? said Andr? Pommier.

Mr. Pommier approached the SLPC for assistance in decorating the tree. SLPC provided some lights, staff and a boom truck to light up the tree. And, when more lights were required, Paul Trottier of Jean Coutu Pharmacy believing in the importance of community got into the Christmas spirit and donated what was required to finish the job. Storm Realty?s Steve Iwachniuk and Bob Copeland also provided support for the project.

Pommier Jewellers has a long history with the Alight at Night Festival having sponsored two Pommier Carriages which provide romantic carriage rides (by reservation) during the Alight at Night Festival.

?The local community is very important to the St. Lawrence Parks Commission. Community support of our attractions is appreciated and we were pleased to be a part of this community partnership. Congratulations to Andr? for taking the initiative on this project,? said Lou Seiler, Manager, Parks & Recreation.

Alight at Night will operate nightly until January 7. It will be closed for Christmas Eve (December 24) and Christmas Day (December 25) from 4:30 p.m to 9:00 p.m.

Adam Lambert arrested in Finland after brawl

Cindy Ord / Getty Images file

Sauli Koskinen, left, and Adam Lambert in New York last month.

By Randee Dawn

"American Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert was released from a Finnish jail Thursday, having spent several hours there for brawling with his boyfriend outside a Helsinki bar, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The police investigator handling the incident, Petri Juvonen, told THR that Lambert was arrested with his Finnish boyfriend (and fellow reality show contestant) Sauli Koskinen in the wee hours of Dec. 22 outside the gay club DTM ("Don't Tell Mama"). They were held for questioning in four possible assault offenses.

Media reports say the two men began arguing inside the club. Koskinen (who won the Finnish version of "Big Brother") and Lambert were kicked out, but continued the fight in the street. A former Miss Helsinki, Sofia Ruusila, who had been out partying with them, tried to break up the incident but told a Finnish entertainment channel that she got hit by Lambert -- by mistake -- in the process.

Internet rumors had been speculating that Lambert would actually be in the United States to perform on Thursday's "The X Factor" finale, but there's no chance of that now, and a show spokesperson has denied the booking.

Investigator Juvonen told THR that he released the two men on Thursday afternoon, having completed his interrogation.

Koskinen has since blogged about the incident, saying: "Celebrities are people too and fame is not easy. Love is not always easy either, but it's forever." (Translated from the Finnish by Google.)

Bobby Montaya?s Girl Scouts Acceptance Causes Three Troops To Quit

Posted by: Bridgette P. LaVictoire on December 22, 2011.

For a lot of young Girl Scouts in Louisiana, their tenure in the organization is now at an end after three leaders resigned in protest after Colorado Girl Scouts admitted a young trans girl. The troops are all based at a Christian school in rural Louisiana, and they apparently never read any of the bylaws of the Girl Scouts which is friendly to lesbians and trans girls.

Colorado Girl Scouts admitted Bobby Montoya, a young trans girl, to their ranks. Bobby lives completely as a girl. She dresses as a girl, plays with girl toys?though admittedly noting that she plays with My Little Ponies these days may not quite qualify as playing with girl toys. With the exception of genitalia, Bobby is a girl, but according to one of the former Scouts leader Susan Bryant-Snure, the situation is ?extremely confusing? and ?almost dangerous situation for children.? She stated that ?This goes against what we believe.? Apparently, the entirety of the Girl Scouts is against what she believes.

It means that Bryant-Snure?s three daughters will be denied the joys of being a Girl Scout.

For her part, Bobby has been bullied for being a girl, but has said ?It?s hurting my heart. It hurts me and my mum both.? Being trans is never easy no matter what age one is. Bobby?s mother, Ms Archuleta has confessed that she had trouble with the change, but says ?I believe he was born in the wrong body.?

The three groups are now actively investigating joining the American Heritage Girls, which is a Christian group set up in the 1990?s to protest the Girl Scouts.

The decision by the Colorado Girl Scouts to admit Bobby, who has not yet joined, has been met with some problems. The Daily Mail notes:

Jeff Johnson, a social issues analyst for Public Policy Department of Focus on the Family, a Colorado-based faith group, told the Baptist Press admitting transgenders to Girl Scout groups will lead to growing gender confusion in society.

?It?s part of biblical truth that God made us male and female in his image,? Mr Johnson told the paper.

This is, of course, why God has seen fit to make so many conditions where male or female is blurred. After all, God must have made hermaphrodites, people with Klinefelters, and all those pesky intersexuals?.you know, because God is just like that, huh?

Column: Finally, some good news for college game (AP)

We interrupt this seamy, scandal-plagued, cash-grab-of-a-college-football season for the following public-service message:

Matt Barkley is staying in school.

The announcement Thursday that Barkley will return to USC for his senior season isn't really a tale about great sacrifice. He knows NFL-ready quarterback prospects almost always hold their value and he'll likely get his millions soon enough.

It isn't even the most uplifting story in the game this week. That would be Eric LeGrand's appearance on the cover of Sports Illustrated commemorating the best sports moment of 2011, when he led his Rutgers teammates onto the field in a wheelchair for a home game in late October, little more than a year after LeGrand was paralyzed playing against Army.

Barkley's decision isn't the newsiest development this week, either, That would be the wrist slap the NCAA gave Ohio State, whose clueless president and shameless athletic director whined that the school had punished itself enough after learning that former coach Jim Tressel lied and cheated his way through the entire 2010 season.

But Barkley's story might be the most surprising, considering how rarely loyalty takes hold across the college football landscape, including the very spot on which he was standing.

Not quite two years ago, Pete Carroll, the coach who recruited Barkley, left for Seattle and the NFL rather than stick around and face the harsh penalties the NCAA was about to levy on Southern California for a host of violations on his watch. The coach Barkley played for the past two seasons, Lane Kiffin, didn't exactly cover himself in glory, either, for the way he departed Tennessee ? abruptly ? to take Carroll's place.

Barkley and his teammates bore the brunt of the postseason bans and all that upheaval and decided to come back anyway.

"I am staying so I can finish what I started," Barkley said to cheers inside USC's Heritage Hall.

More than a few pro scouts shook their heads at that moment, though, recalling how Matt Leinart made the same call to a similar round of cheers a handful of years earlier.

"It's another year with my pals, no matter how it turns out," Leinart said a few days after his decision. "But I'll tell you what: I didn't want to look back 10 or 20 years down the road and find out I passed on the chance to be a part of something really special."

He was coming off USC's back-to-back national championships and a Heisman Trophy-winning season. He didn't duplicate either achievement in the one that followed and his draft stock tumbled when Texas quarterback Vince Young, who outplayed Leinart in a thrilling Bowl Championship Series finale, declared himself eligible for the same 2006 draft. Leinart, a lock for the top spot a year earlier, tumbled to No. 10 and wound up costing himself millions.

If there's any consolation for Barkley in that example, it's that Leinart, despite proving himself a barely adequate backup in the pros, still made millions. Plus, like Leinart, Barkley will be returning to a Trojans squad with a very realistic chance to win a national championship next season and a strong enough supporting cast ? on offense, anyway ? to get him a Heisman Trophy.

USC finished 10-2 and climbed all the way to No. 5 before shutting things down for the season. While Barkley loses his best protector on the offensive line ? left tackle Matt Kalil already declared for the NFL draft, where could go as high as No. 2 ? the quarterback will reunite with receivers Marqise Lee and Robert Woods, a tandem that just might be the nation's best.

We won't know how things turn out, of course, for a while. But it's hardly the bad business decision those NFL scouts panned it as, if only because Stanford's Andrew Luck made the same one at the end of last season and cemented his place at the top of next spring's NFL draft.

And the quartet of quarterbacks who did the same dating back to Peyton Manning in 1997 ? Leinart, Tim Tebow (2009) and Jake Locker (2010) ? all were gone by the end of the first round the following year.

But minimizing the risk that Barkley is taking shouldn't stop us from marveling at the loyalty he showed to a school and a sport that always rewards coaches and administrators handsomely, but not always the kids who make it all possible.

The lessons the sport has been teaching the past few years ? from fleeing coaches to shady conference realignment schemes to university presidents only too willing to look the other way ? is that it's every man for himself. By returning to USC for one more year, Barkley signaled he was still about something else.

Bravo.

"That's not an easy decision," said Kiffin, who won't get a better present this Christmas. "Not many people would do what Matt has done."

Cancer cells tend to take up more glucose than healthy cells, and researchers are increasingly interested in exploiting this tendency with drugs that target cancer cells' altered metabolism.

Cancer cells' sugar cravings arise partly because they turn off their mitochondria, power sources that burn glucose efficiently, in favor of a more inefficient mode of using glucose. They benefit because the byproducts can be used as building blocks for fast-growing cells.

Scientists at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University have shown that many types of cancer cells flip a switch that diverts glucose away from mitochondria. Their findings suggest that tyrosine kinases, enzymes that drive the growth of several types of cancer, play a greater role in mitochondria than previously recognized.

The results also highlight the enzyme PDHK (pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase) as an important point of control for cancer cell metabolism.

The results were published online Thursday by the journal Molecular Cell. http://www.cell.com/molecular-cell/

Video available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1hUSiXISYs

"We and others have shown that PDHK is upregulated in several types of human cancer, and our findings demonstrate a new way that PDHK activity is enhanced in cancer cells," says Jing Chen, PhD, associate professor of hematology and medical oncology at Emory University School of Medicine and Winship Cancer Institute. "PDHK is a very attractive target for anticancer therapy because of its role in regulating cancer metabolism."

Chen and Sumin Kang, PhD, assistant professor of hematology and medical oncology at Emory University School of Medicine, are co-corresponding authors. Postdoctoral fellows Taro Hitosugi, Jun Fan and Tae-Wook Chung are co-first authors of the paper. Co-authors at Emory include Georgia Chen, PhD, Sagar Lonial, MD, Haian Fu, PhD, and Fadlo Khuri, MD. Collaborators at Yale University, Novartis and Cell Signaling Technology contributed to the paper.

Chen and his colleagues started out studying the tyrosine kinase FGFR1, which is activated in several types of cancer. Tyrosine kinases attach a phosphate to other proteins, making them more or less active. They found that FGFR1 activates the enzyme PDHK, which has a gatekeeper function for mitochondria.

"We used FGFR1 as a platform to look at how metabolic enzymes are modified by oncogenic tyrosine kinases," Chen says. "We discovered that several oncogenic tyrosine kinases activate PDHK, and we found that many of those tyrosine kinases are found within mitochondria."

This was a surprise because tyrosine kinases are usually thought to drive growth by being active next to the cell membrane, Chen says.

Introducing a form of PDHK that is insensitive to tyrosine kinases into human cancer cells forces the cells to grow more slowly and form smaller tumors in mice, they found. This indicates that PDHK could be a target for drugs that specifically target cancer cells' altered metabolism.

The experimental drug dichloroacetate (DCA), which inactivates PDHK, is being used in new clinical trials for cancer. Chen is collaborating with Haian Fu, professor of pharmacology and director of the Emory Chemical Biology Discovery Center, to find other, more potent inhibitors of PDHK.

Juror in Microsoft case at peace with decision

(AP) ? The lone holdout juror who prevented a Utah company from getting as much as $1.2 billion from one-time rival Microsoft Corp. for alleged antitrust violations says he's at peace with his decision.

Corbyn Alvey, a 21-year-old security guard from Magna, told KSL-TV (http://bit.ly/ubPwcB ) that he didn't think there was enough evidence presented during the two-month trial in U.S. District Court in Salt Lake City to support the claims of Provo-based Novell Inc.

Novell sued Microsoft in 2004, claiming the software giant duped it into developing the once-popular WordPerfect writing program for Windows 95 only to pull the plug so Microsoft could gain market share with its own product. Novell says it was later forced to sell WordPerfect for a $1.2 billion loss.

"I walk away feeling honestly myself, and I can't speak for the other jurors, that I made the right decision even if it resulted in a hung jury," Alvey said Saturday. "There were so many inferences that needed to be drawn that I felt that it was unfair to Microsoft to go out on a limb and say, 'yes.'"

Alvey described the three days of jury deliberations as stressful. The 11 other jurors sided with Novell.

"Obviously, I wanted to convince them to agree with me and they wanted to convince me to agree with them," he told KSL.

Bill Gates testified last month that he had no idea his decision to drop a tool for outside developers would sidetrack Novell. Gates said he was acting to protect Windows 95 and future versions from crashing.

Novell argued that Gates ordered Microsoft engineers to reject WordPerfect as a Windows 95 word processing application because he feared it was too good.

Alvey said the jury agreed on the technical aspects of the case but disagreed on what Novell could have accomplished "but for" Gates' decision.

"There was a lot of speculation in this 'but for' world," he said.

As for Gates' testimony, Alvey said, "The man was a little sarcastic at times. If anything, it provided a little break from the monotonous questions and answers ... I think from his testimony, what I heard, and what I saw in the emails, Bill Gates was a man who took every threat extremely seriously."

Jury foreman Carl Banks said he tried hard to get a verdict.

"It was a tough case. It was long and it was hard and it was grueling," he said. "We gave it our best shot."

Novell attorneys have said they would seek to retry the case with a new jury. Microsoft said it would file a motion asking the judge to dismiss Novell's complaint for good and avoid a second trial.

Gold to drop in Q1, far from retesting record high: Reuters poll (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Gold prices will fall below $1,500 an ounce over the next three months and are unlikely to retest September's all-time highs until later 2012 at the earliest, according to a Reuters poll of 20 hedge fund managers, economists and traders.

The bleak forecast, coming after gold has lost 11 percent of its value so far this month, is likely to fuel fears that bullion is close to ending its more than decade long bull run and entering a bear market.

Almost half of respondents predicted bullion will fall to 1,450 an ounce in the first quarter next year, with three seeing prices as low as $1,400 an ounce.

The forecasts come after a dismal performance last week when prices hit a 2 1/2 month low of $1,560 and gold lost its safe haven status.

Selling was fuelled by a scramble by hedge funds for cash to meet client redemptions at the end of a difficult year and a run for cash by European banks seeking to raise capital.

"What is surprising is that in an environment where headline risk news is bigger than ever, gold has actually fallen from its highs," said Christoph Eibl, CEO and founding partner of the Swiss commodity hedge fund Tiberius.

"We believe that, in 2012, of all metals gold will be the worst performing," Eibl said.

The market eked out small gains Friday to trade just under $1,600, but showed little sign of strength even after a small bout of short covering took other financial markets higher.

The precious metal is now heading for its first quarterly loss for the fourth quarter after its second-worst rout since September 2008 when the global credit crunch was at its height.

In another immediately bearish sign, U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) figures released Friday showed that managed money in gold futures and options cut bullish bets for the second consecutive week.

DOWNBEAT OUTLOOK

The long-term outlook is no more upbeat either, with more than half of respondents predicting that gold is unlikely to stage another run to new all-time highs until at least the second half of 2012.

Four said they don't expect a new record until at least 2014.

A lack of immediate monetary easing or stimulus programs by central banks has prompted money managers to turn bearish on gold even though the precious metal is traditionally considered a safe haven in times of uncertainty.

"To me, gold is not attractive right now because we don't see any inflation threats," said Jeffrey Sherman, commodities portfolio manager of DoubleLine Capital, a Los Angeles-based investment manager with $21 billion in assets.

BREAK OUT

Gold has increasingly moved in tandem with risky assets such as equities and industrial commodities. But gold broke ranks last week with a 7 percent decline, which dwarfed a 3 percent drop of the S&P 500.

Bullion's plunge below its 200-day moving average, which it had held for nearly three years, prompted a prominent market watcher to call an end to gold's decade-long bull cycle.

"We have the beginnings of a real bear market, and the death of a bull," said veteran trader Dennis Gartman, a long-time gold bull who completely exited his bullion investments last week.

Since September, gold has underperformed commodities measured by the RJ/CRB index and the euro, while U.S. equities measured by the S&P 500 eked out a slight gain.

Research reveals role of government funding in pharmaceutical R&D and its direct and indirect impact on innovative new drugs

NEW YORK -- Research conducted by Columbia Business School Professor Frank Lichtenberg, Courtney C. Brown Professor of Business, Finance and Economics, Healthcare and Pharmaceutical Management Program, and Bhaven Sampat, Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Mailman School of Public Health of Columbia University, identifies the respective contributions of direct and indirect government support in research and development of new pharmaceutical drugs. Although industry supplies the bulk of the funds devoted to research and development, the public sector primarily the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supports most of the nation's basic biomedical research. The research, recently featured in Health Affairs, finds direct government funding to be important to research and development for the most innovative new drugs, which typically proceed through the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) "priority-review" process for approval. However, direct government funding is less important for research and development of so-called standard-review drugs that proceed through the FDA's normal review process. The researchers' analysis can help determine the merits of various policy proposals, such as those that would attempt to recapture a share of drug profits and return them to the government through recoupment or march-in authority. March-in proposes that taxpayers should not have to pay twice for publicly funded research once through taxes, and once through monopoly prices or restricted access to drugs.

The paper focuses on patents for drugs approved between 1988 and 2005. The analysis studies a range of publicly available data from federal agencies including the Patent and Trademark Office, the National Library of Medicine, the FDA, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). Of the 478 drugs in the sample, 379 were covered by at least one patent. There were 1,073 distinct patents on these 379 drugs.. The researchers identified public-sector patents to be ones assigned to a government agency, which generally resulted from research conducted inside that agency, and all of those with government interest statements. Most derived from academic laboratories that had received government funding, generally through extramural research grants. The recipients of federal research grants are required to acknowledge government funding in their patent applications.

The researchers' analysis found striking differences between priority-review drugs and standard-review drugs in terms of the proportion receiving a public-sector patent. The direct government role is much more pronounced for the most innovative drugsthose receiving priority review. The data also show that the indirect impact of government funding is much larger than the direct effect. Although fewer than 10 percent of drugs had a public-sector patent, far larger proportions of drugs had patents that cited a public-sector patent, a government publication, or both. In all cases, the public-sector influence was much greater on priority-review drugs than on those receiving a standard review.

Professor Lichtenberg explains the significance of the study. "This analysis underscores why it is important to distinguish between the direct and indirect roles of government funding in pharmaceutical innovation. For example, policies such as recoupment and march-in would apply only to drugs in whose development the government had played a direct role."

(AP) ? As its workers celebrated with hot chocolate and cinnamon buns, Zynga saw its stock dinged on its first day of trading Friday ? an unexpected turn of events for a closely watched public debut seen as a precursor to Facebook's next year.

Zynga Inc., the online game developer behind "FarmVille," ''Mafia Wars" and other popular time killers on Facebook, raised at least $1 billion in its initial public offering of stock, the largest for a U.S. Internet company since Google's $1.4 billion IPO in 2004.

But by Friday afternoon, Zynga's stock fell 50 cents, or 5 percent, to close at $9.50. The stock priced at $10 on Thursday, at the high end of its expected range. It traded as high as $11.50 on Friday before heading into a downward spiral on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

It was far from the eye-popping jump that has been the trend this year for freshly public Internet darlings such as LinkedIn Corp., which saw its stock double on its first trading day.

Zynga's opening ? with a ticker symbol of "ZNGA" ? was supposed to be big. After all, unlike many others with IPOs, the company is profitable, with more than 220 million people playing its games on Facebook each month.

What this all means for Facebook's IPO, expected sometime after April, is hard to say. One thing is clear, though.

"A hot IPO is not guaranteed," said Kathleen Smith, principal of IPO investment advisory firm Renaissance Capital.

Despite the big-name public offerings this year, the IPO market is not in good health. Buyers are skittish and concerned about the high volatility of freshly public stocks, Smith said. Big name or not, investors don't want to pay sky-high prices for stocks, especially not before a company has proven itself with good earnings reports and analyst ratings.

Seventy percent of the 125 companies that went public this year are now trading below their IPO price, according to Renaissance Capital.

While Friday's drop doesn't look good, it's not devastating for Zynga. Its CEO, Mark Pincus, said the company's focus is on "delivering great products" that expand audience for social games over the next few years ? and not on the next trading day.

"We didn't have any expectations coming into this whole process," he said in an interview. "We decided to go public a long time ago."

Pincus rang the Nasdaq's opening bell in San Francisco, a first in the city for a freshly public company. The company's roughly 1,700 San Francisco employees woke up at the crack of down to celebrate with cinnamon buns and hot cocoa. Zynga also delivered video of the opening ceremony over the Internet to its offices around the world.

Thursday's pricing gives Zynga a market value of about $7 billion. That's roughly half of the value of online deals site Groupon, which began trading in early November. Zynga, though, sold a much bigger chunk of its available shares, 14.3 percent compared with Groupon's 5.5 percent. It's an issue of supply and demand ? selling more shares means investors don't have to scramble to get their hands on them.

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter said stocks trade based on supply and demand on the first day.

In Zynga's case, he believes the IPO's underwriters placed more shares with investors who were going to "flip" the stock ? that is, buy a hot stock and quickly sell it to make a profit instead of holding on to it for the long run. All that selling tempered the stock's price, and other nervous investors started selling, too.

Sterne Agee's Arvind Bhatia said the issue came down to valuation ? what people are willing to pay.

"You might like a company but not its valuation," said Bhatia, who took the unusual step of starting coverage of Zynga's stock before it went public, giving it an "Underperform" rating and a price target of $7.

With its huge player base and a few loyal spenders, Zynga had net income of $90.6 million in 2010, an unusual pre-IPO money-maker in the sector.

Cowen & Co. analyst Doug Creutz, however, initiated coverage Friday with a "Neutral" rating on the stock. Although Zynga is the leader in Facebook gaming, he's concerned that it won't be able to grow fast enough to justify its stock price. Growth in Facebook gaming has slowed, and Zynga's market share has declined from 50 percent to 38 percent of daily active users, he wrote.

He's also concerned that Zynga's famously aggressive and hard-charging culture may not be the best field to grow good games in. Others have raised concerns that the focus on deadlines and profits might be squeezing out creativity and talent.

In November, Groupon raised $700 million in its IPO. The granddaddy of all Internet IPOs might happen next year, as Facebook Inc. is expected to raise as much as $10 billion.

Bhatia declined to speculate about what Zynga's first-day drop might mean for Facebook. But he pointed out that what was a bad year for Zynga was a good year for Facebook. That's because Facebook stated charging application developers a 30 percent cut of the money they make through its site. That means for every dollar a player spends on "FarmVille" crops, 30 cents goes to Facebook.

"They are in the driver's seat," Bhatia said of Facebook. The company, he added, is "in class of its own."

DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, who sits on Zynga's board, said Zynga and Facebook have both benefited by working together.

"As important as Facebook is to Zynga, Zynga is to Facebook," he said in an interview. "I have seen very good rapport with the two Marks and I would expect that relationship to continue to grow."
