We have reported on a Stanford University? discovery of an antibody that can shrink tumor growth in mice and that studies on humans are expected to begin within two years. The war on cancer tumors is raging on.? Now comes word that a new so called ?universal? cancer vaccine is being developed by the drug company Vaxil Biotheraputics along with researchers at Tel Aviv University. The therapy, which targets a molecule found in 90% of all cancers, could? provide a universal injection that allows patients? immune systems to fight off common cancers including prostate cancer and breast cancer.? Preliminary results from early clinical trials have shown the vaccine can trigger an immune response in patients and reduce levels of disease.? The researchers now plan to conduct larger trials in patients to prove it can be effective against a range of different cancers.
?As a therapeutic vaccine this one is designed for patients who are already suffering from cancer to help their bodies fight off the disease rather than to prevent disease in the first place. The scientists say more testing is needed before it can be used for widespread use.? They believe it could be available in 6 years. Details of the findings are? published in the current issue of journal Vaccine .(http:// ddx.doi.org/10.1016/j.vaccine 2011.04.103)
