Pet ear infections are very common and should be taken care of quickly to prevent a more serious condition. Dogs and cats with this type of infection are one of the top reasons a pet is taken to the vet.

Dogs with floppy ears like cockers or retrievers are more prone to ear infections because the floppy ear covers the ear canal, air flow is restricted, and thus an environment of warmth and moisture can create the conditions for disease to grow. Cats have fewer problems, but Persians with their long hair are the most susceptible of all the cat breeds.

Problems can develop from mites, fleas, ticks, flies, yeast infections, allergies, debris in the ear such as fox tails, or even a cancerous growth. Normal ear wax is a substance that is light tan in color. Infections can be very painful for your pet.

Symptoms of your pet?s ear irritations or infections are:

*Excessive shaking of the head
*Scratching the ears
*Rubbing the head on furniture or carpet
*Strong odor from the ears
*Swollen ears
*Dark brown, thick substance in the ear
*Red and hot ears
*Loss of balance
*Tilting the head a lot
*Hearing loss
*Yellowish discharge

If your pet has any of these symptoms, it is advisable to take your pet to your veterinarian for a complete diagnosis. Follow the directions of the medication until your pet is completely cured. Obviously, the sooner the pet receives the necessary diagnosis and medication, the sooner your pet will be relieved of his pain.

Ear mites can?t be seen by the naked eye, but you can see a blackish, very small grainy substance. You can get over-the-counter medication for this, but follow the direction precisely.

There are products on the market that are useful treatments for pets with any of the irritations listed above. A few suggested items are treatments for mites, cleaners with eucalyptus, ear wax remover applications, and anti-bacterial agents to aid in ear hygiene.

Prevention measures can be done to help eliminate these diseases or irritations. Bathing your pet with a good quality flea and tick shampoo can be helpful, but use caution around the ears. Cotton balls gently placed in the pet?s ear can prevent moisture from building up in the ear which would create a happy place for bacteria growth.

Examine your pet?s ears often. Having a groomer clear the ears of matted hair will keep air free flowing around his ears and it will keep them much drier. Keep your dog?s and cat?s ears clean and dry to prevent infections.

A healthy pet is a happy pet, and prevention is less expensive for you and less painful for your pet.
