MEXICO CITY ? Call it a political slugging match.
Mexico's largest leftist party filed a complaint with electoral authorities over Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez's use of the logo of the former ruling party on his trunks during a bout with Filipino Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Democratic Revolution Party, or PRD, made copies of the complaint public Wednesday, one day after it was filed with the country's Federal Electoral Institute.
The complaint contends the use of the logo of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, violated a temporary ban on campaigning ahead of elections and a prohibition on campaigning abroad.
The boxing match was broadcast in Mexico on Saturday, just hours before Sunday's elections in Michoacan state. The PRI's candidate won the Michoacan governorship, which had been held by the PRD.
The complaint noted that many of those attending Marquez's fight were Mexican, and the match was widely watched in Mexico.
"This amounts to the promotion of a party on the international level, something that represents an attack on the equality of political competition in our country," the complaint says.
It asks authorities to take measures to prevent such incidents in the future. The institute has the power to impose fines and other punishments for violations of electoral law.
Neither Marquez, who lost the bout, nor the PRI has explained why the party's logo was on the boxer's shorts.
The Institutional Revolutionary Party ruled Mexico for 71 years until it lost the presidential election in 2000, but opinion polls are giving the PRI an edge heading into next July's presidential election.
