The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a powerful business interest organization, is beefing up their political shop with the hiring of a new Senior Political Strategist and the promotion of a political affairs staffer.
?Never has the voice of business been more important than in the upcoming election,? said Thomas J. Donohue, the group?s president, in a statement announcing the changes.
Continue ReadingThe Chamber is hiring Scott Reed as a Senior Political Strategist to guide the group?s national political strategy and advertising efforts. Reed has experience as Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole?s national campaign manager during the 1996 cycle, and formerly served as the Republican National Committee?s Chief Operating Officer.
The organization will also promote Rob Engstrom to the position of Senior Vice President of Political Affairs, which involves leading the day-to-day operations of political and election-related activities. Engstrom helped with the group?s strategy during the 2010 midterm elections, and was involved in the Chamber?s 87 percent election rate for endorsed candidates.
The Chamber?s election unit spent $50 million on the 2010 mid-term elections, about double what it spent in 2006, reports the Wall Street Journal, which also notes that although the organization doesn?t endorse only Republicans, it has had a strong tendency to do so in recent election cycles.
The Chamber of Commerce has traditionally not focused on presidential elections, and will likely focus on Senate and House races.
