Canterbury appears to have the most buoyant job market in New Zealand thanks to rebuild-related work opportunities.
Figures in the latest Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment report on job vacancies showed skilled job advertisements rose 8.5 per cent in January from the start of last year nationwide, but there was a huge 80.6 per cent increase in Canterbury construction and engineering jobs.
The Canterbury region had the biggest increase in the number of job opportunities overall, up 22 per cent while the Wellington market declined 2.2 per cent and Auckland rose 6.5 per cent.
"Recruitment activities usually start to pick up in January, and the growth rate this January is higher than a year ago," acting manager of labour market and business performance David Paterson said.
"This is reflected in the strong growth in the seasonally adjusted series over the month.
"The Ministry forecasts strong employment growth in Canterbury compared to other regions. Employment growth in construction is forecast to grow strongly due to the Canterbury rebuild."
There were 497 construction, architecture and engineering jobs listed in the Canterbury region on Trade Me this morning.
