A new type of male contraceptive could be created thanks to the discovery of a key gene essential for sperm development.

The finding could lead to alternatives to the conventional male contraceptives that rely on disrupting the production of hormones, such as testosterone. These treatments can cause side-effects such as irritability, mood swings and acne.

Research, led by the University of Edinburgh, has shown how a gene ? Katnal1 ? is critical to enable sperm to mature in the testes.

If scientists can regulate the Katnal1 gene in the testes, they could prevent sperm from maturing completely, making them ineffective without changing hormone levels.

The research, which is published in the journal PLoS Genetics, could also help in finding treatments for cases of male infertility when malfunction of the Katnal1 gene hampers sperm development.

Dr Lee Smith, Reader in Genetic Endocrinology at the University of Edinburgh's Centre for Reproductive Health, said: "If we can find a way to target this gene in the testes, we could potentially develop a non-hormonal contraceptive.

"The important thing is that the effects of such a drug would be reversible because Katnal1 only affects sperm cells in the later stages of development, so it would not hinder the early stages of sperm production and the overall ability to produce sperm.

"Although other research is being carried out into non-hormonal male contraceptives, identification of a gene that controls sperm production in the way Katnal1 does is a unique and significant step forward in our understanding of testis biology."

Scientists found that male mice that were modified so they did not have the Katnal1 gene were infertile.

Further investigation showed that this was because the gene was needed to allow the sperm to develop and mature.

The researchers showed that Katnal1 was needed to regulate the scaffolding structures known as microtubules, which form part of the cells that support and provide nutrients to developing sperm.

Breaking down and rebuilding these microtubules enables the sperm cells to move within the testes as they mature. Katnal1 acts as the essential controller of this process.

"We want a Scotland that is fairer and more prosperous."

The campaign hopes to tap into a blend of historical rivalry, different political tastes, and a perception that the British parliament in London does not safeguard Scotland's interests to win a referendum in 2014, which would pave the way for full independence two years later.

The launch event drew on rousing patriotic music and a film showing the country's stunning Highland landscapes, fishermen, universities, and, inevitably, leaping kilt-clad dancers.

It also relied on celebrity endorsement. A message of support was read out from actor Sean Connery, an Edinburgh milkman before he found fame as secret agent James Bond.

Hollywood actor Brian Cox called Scotland's current predicament "centralized servitude" and related how, like many Scots, he had become disenchanted by previous Labour governments led by former prime ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

"The parliament at Westminster can see no further than the end of its own bridge," he said.

Scotland's national poet Liz Lochhead read out a poem focused on English-Scottish rivalry in the 16th century.

Opinion polls show that around 40 percent of Scottish people are sympathetic to independence, with around 10 percent undecided and the remaining 50 percent opposed. South of the border in England, polls show people are largely apathetic.

Author Harry Reid said the referendum's success may hinge on whether the Labour Party, traditionally popular in Scotland, can revive its fortunes.

Scotland is more inclined to vote for the left, whereas English voters have voted in much larger numbers for the right, underscoring a political fault line between north and south.

Although the Conservative Party won more votes than any other party at the last British general election in 2010, it won only one parliamentary seat in Scotland.

"The rest of the world would be surprised and shocked that the UK was unable to hold together," Professor John Curtice of the University of Strathclyde told Reuters in a phone interview.

?There used to be a very active Association of Medical Schools in Africa? We have argued for a revitalization of that association with the intent that it will provide opportunity for collaboration across Africa?and indeed that association is being revamped.?

Professor Sewankambo?s comments followed his presentation called Developing A Sustainable Workforce In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Unique Inter-Africa Collaboration at the recent Council on Health Research and Development Group (COHRED) 2012 forum in Cape Town, South Africa.?

It was the first global forum to bring together key actors who make research and innovation work for health, equity and development. Among those attending were senior government officials, academic institutions, civil societies, international organizations among others.

On Wednesday, TorrentFreak reported that?due to a copyright complaint from AVG Technologies, the?original Rickroll video?has been removed from YouTube," sending the meme-loving Internet into a fit of apoplexy. The YouTube?page features more than a few comments by momentarily?outraged?YouTube users. (The funniest from MrTimthos:?"I was scared. I thought he had finally given me up.")?

But as of this posting, the Astley?video, bearing the title?"RickRoll'D," is very much available, and has over 61 million views. To keep an eye on its status, we're embedding it here:

Oliver Hirschbiegel, the director of this very serious film, is?a self-professed fan of this very silly meme. The producers behind movie, Constantin Films, not so much.?

The "Hitler Reacts" parodies all fell under fair use, which permits limited use of copyright material for purposes such as commentary. As such, they are again raging free on YouTube.

On YouTube, the policy is take down first, ask questions after people start to complain. A glitch in the Content ID system may be behind the momentary loss of RickRoll'D, EFF attorney Julie Samuels speculated in a phone interview.?
