Product Review: Nivea Sparkling White Acne Oil Control

Hello ladies! I am back with another review! I promise this will be the last for this month for sure!?

I have used up my Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser a month back and I felt so bad about it. I was thinking of getting a new one but I remember I got the Nivea Sparkling White Acne Oil Control whitening cleansing foam so might as well try it.?

This is a whitening product which is not really my thing since I already have fair skin. I don't want to be whiter that I really am, This is good for combination to oily skin which is my skin type as of the moment.?

It is packaged in a white shiny tube that has pink accents at the front part of the tube. The packaging is really nice and is close to the standard packaging of Nivea which is simple and clean.?

Its claim is it has two times smaller molecules that will clean deeper into the pores to prevent acne and reveal fairer skin. The cleanser has a white color that is quite frothy already. It has a faint floral green scent to it. Its not overwhelming to the nose when you wash your face which is good.?

I have been checking out some drugstores to check the price of this but I haven't seen this being sold to my local drugstore, but I saw online that this costs 75php which is great if you are on a budget. It takes off the shine but not totally which is okay since it will give the skin that natural shine.

One thing though that disturbs me is the cap. The cap is a little flimsy so sometimes even if I close the cap it would open back again.

Things I like about this:
- Did not break me out.
- Has a faint floral green scent.
- Easy to use.
- Took away too much shine and oil from my face.
- Cheap price

Things I don't like about this:
- The cap is too flimsy.

Verdict?
I like this product. I do feel that it made my skin lighter but not into a pale white state but more of a glowing way which is more healthy to look if you ask me.

Will I repurchase?
Maybe not. I like this product no doubt but I don't really prefer whitening products anymore.

What is your favorite cleanser to wash off dirt and oil? Let me know on the comment box below :)

Much Love!

xx Alice

Meet the FDNY?s one-woman Twitter team

FDNY Social Media Manager Emily RahimiAs Storm Sandy barreled down on the Northeast on Monday, a one-woman response team at the Fire Department of New York monitored Twitter through the night to help people in need.

Emily Rahimi, a seven-year veteran at the FDNY, kept New Yorkers updated on developments from a storm that flooded many parts of the city Monday night through the official department Twitter feed. In a flurry of more than 100 tweets, Rahimi, who was still working at her desk on Tuesday morning, replied to cries for help sent out on the social media service, passed along updates from Mayor Michael Bloomberg and followed up when New Yorkers posted tweets of thanks.

"I was just tweeting to people who were not able to get through to 911," Rahimi told Yahoo News.

Rahimi posted updates to the official FDNY Twitter account urging those facing emergencies to dial 911. Because the response effort was divided among city government agencies, calling 911 allowed dispatchers to filter out assignments instead of every request going to the fire department.

"*Do not* tweet emergency calls," Rahimi wrote as the storm hit.

But for those unable to access a phone or who could not get through, Rahimi was there to help.

"My friends' parents who are trapped on #StatenIsland are at 238 Weed Ave. Water almost up to 2nd flr.," posted Michael Luo, an investigative reporter for The New York Times.

"I have contacted dispatch," Rahimi responded within minutes. "They will try to send help as soon as they can."

Rahimi's tweets sometimes helped serve as a much-needed voice of support while victims of the storm waited for help to arrive.

"[A] volunteer's brother is trapped in 301 oriental blvd apt 4h can u help us?" a user with the account name @bklyndafna posted on Twitter.

"Has he called 911?" Rahimi posted in response.

"yes no response," @bklyndafna said.

"That area is busy now. Units are working as quickly/safely as possible. Will make sure dispatch is on it. Keep in touch with him," Rahimi wrote back.

The FDNY Twitter feed is full of conversations between distressed friends and relatives and the FDNY, which offered support and guidance.

The account is still up and running, providing advice for poststorm safety and, of course, still on the lookout for those who are stranded.

New York City hospital evacuates patients and other health news ...

In a scramble that will be familiar to Louisiana medical professionals, one of New York City's hospitals evacuated patients last night after back-up power failed, the New York Times reported. NYU Langone Medical Center, located in lower Manhattan, started moving patients on Monday evening after emergency systems didn't start following power outages caused by Hurricane Sandy.

The newspaper reported that all 215 patients were taken to other hospitals in the city.

Bloomberg News reported that one of the hospital's trustees said the generators were old and in a bad location. The Guardian newspaper reported that the hospital had eight generators, including one on a higher floor. The patients who were moved included critically-ill infants, the paper noted.

Struggles with back-up systems at hospitals and nursing homes has been a consistent problem?in Louisiana following hurricanes. These problems rose to a crisis level following Hurricane Katrina, when patients were trapped in flooded hospitals for days until they could be evacuated.

Some families of patients who died while waiting rescue from the hot, powerless facilities said hospitals should have evacuated their relatives before the storm. In March 2011, Tenet Healthcare Corp., which had run Memorial Medical Center, settled a class-action lawsuit that accused the company of failing to adequately prepare.

But hospital and nursing home administrators have also struggled during more recent storms. Thousands of patients from the New Orleans area were evacuated to Baton Rouge in advance of Hurricane Gustav in 2008, only to end up in facilities without sufficient back-up power, which meant they lacked air conditioning. Some hospitals in the capital city ended up transporting patients back to New Orleans, which fared better during that storm.

Following the storm, ProPublica's Sheri Fink reported about the tradeoffs state officials had to consider when deciding to evacuate frail patients, who sometimes can't handle the move.?After Gustav, then-health secretary Alan Levine said he believed the state made the right decision to transport?patients out of the New Orleans area.

Most recently after Hurricane Isaac, Mayor Mitch Landrieu criticized private hospitals and nursing homes, saying they need to focus on having back-up power sources for disasters.

. . . . .

In other health care news this week, The?New York Times on Monday reported that the Obama?administration is finalizing rules that will put in place two nationwide health insurance plans available?throughout the country. The health insurance plans, which will contract with the federal government, are part of Obama's health care law. They were meant to increase competition in state insurance markets.

Some insurance commissioners are skeptical, saying these "multistate plans" need to be subject to the same regulations as other plans in their markets, according to the article.

. . . . .

Kaiser Health News interviewed uninsured patients in Miami and found they are not focusing on health care as they ponder who to vote for next week. Instead, the uninsured people who spoke about their intentions said they were more focused on other issues, such as what the candidates would do for the poor in general, or their positions on Cuban immigration.

President Obama Gets Us One Step Closer To Single Payer Health ...

It?s not the public health insurance option progressives fought for during the crafting of the Affordable Care Act, but it is close.

The Obama administration is preparing to have the federal government take a more prominent role in health care reform by sponsoring two new multi-state health insurance plans that will be available for individuals and small businesses to purchase under the state exchanges created by Obamacare. Those exchanges launch in 2014.

As reported in the New York Times, the national plans will compete directly with other private insurance plans. Premiums and benefits for the federal plans will be negotiated by the United States Office of Personal Management, the same agency that oversees benefits for federal employees ? employees like congressional representatives. The details of these plans have yet to be finalized, but if conservative concern over the plans is any indication, progressives may have scored more of a victory than we first realized with Obamacare.

Robert E. Moffit, a senior fellow at the conservative Heritage Foundation, told the New York Times that he worried that ?the nationwide health plans, operating under terms and conditions set by the federal government, will become the robust public option that liberals always wanted.? That?s because the federal government will be able to create larger groups of insured to leverage the most advantageous coverage. Opponents of these plans argue this tilts the balance of power to the government?s benefit in the market while supporters note this simply allows individuals who had previously been unable to collectively bargain for coverage to do so fairly.

While the creation of these multi-state exchanges are certainly a step in the right direction, and holds a lot of promise, women are once again being short-changed in the coverage thanks to anti-choice politicking over abortion access. So while conservatives love to insist taxpayer dollars subsidize abortion under Obamacare, that is simply not the case.

The federal health care law stipulates that at least one of the multi-state plans offered must provide insurance without coverage for abortion services. For those plans that do cover abortions, those plans must establish separate accounts, one for abortion services and one for all other medical services. That means additional burden and expense built in for women needing comprehensive insurance coverage, even at the federal level.

On the whole, though, so long as the American health insurance industry insists on a grouping risk and benefits, and so long as Congress seems unwilling to seriously take on the issue of breaking the health insurance monopolies of care, then these multi-state plans are the best way of providing the best coverage to the most people at the most affordable cost. And it?s just another reminder of what is at stake in this election.

BFTKT Blog | How You Can Protect Yourself From Debt Relief Scams

There is an increasing demand for debt relief programs. More and more people are getting into debt, and need help getting out. And more and more companies are advertising their services, making it harder to separate the good companies from the bad ones.

You?ve probably heard the horror stories about people getting ?ripped off? by companies that aren?t legitimate. The truth is that most debt relief programs are run by honest companies that will do what they promise. But like in any service industry, there are those companies that just care about making money, and don?t make customer service or satisfaction a priority.

debt relief scams companies Follow Me on Pinterest So you have to be extra careful in choosing your program as you may end up a victim of debt relief scams. Sure, there are many good companies out there that will help you get back on track.? But it is still hard to find the right one. Here are some tips on how you can protect yourself from getting ripped off:

Check Out The Company?s Background

The internet makes this much easier. You can?t just rely on a good looking website, with lots of official looking information & testimonials. The best way to do this is to check the business through the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Check on how many complaints have been filed, and how many have been addressed to the customer?s satisfaction. You can also do a search for the name of the company, and see what other people are saying about the company on financial forums and other websites. The info you can find, the better, as no news might not be good news, it just might mean the company hasn?t been around for very long.? So do your research.

Get Everything In Writing

While a debt relief company looks legitimate, it does not necessarily mean that you are in good hands. So make sure you read the agreements very carefully before your sign anything or send in any money. Even if the documents look confusing, read them. Or have a friend read them who might have a little more expertise or knowledge about personal finance. Either way, if it is not in writing do not assume anything is covered, so don?t just rely on the words of the people you talk to in the company. Even if they are honest, they might not know all the answers or be fully trained.

Ask Lots Of Questions

What types of questions should you ask? Anything you need to know in order to feel comfortable working with that company. Make sure you understand exactly how they do business, and how they will help you fix your debt problems. Here are some additional questions to ask. Is the company honest and transparent in dealing with their clients?? Does the company meet expectations and deliver results?? How do they handle customer service?

Here Are Common ?Red Flags? To Watch Out For

Here are the top red flags (warning signs) that will signal you to avoid the company or services:

  • If the company is more concerned about how much you can pay them, it is best to stay away and look for another.? This company will only exploit your situation to earn more profits, instead of helping you resolve your problem.? You are better off with companies that show genuine concern about your financial difficulties and debt problems.
  • Do not be blinded by super low quotations, or incredible savings you can get from enlisting the services of these companies.? Most likely, these companies are frauds.? They are just using their extreme low quotes to lure you into using their services and then after paying for the fees, leave you empty handed with your problem unresolved.
  • If the solution they offer is to wipe away all your debts, you are in the wrong hands.? Legitimate and reputable debt relief companies, no matter how much expertise and negotiating skills they have, can never arrange for a complete wipe out of your outstanding debts.? They can only make the payment more convenient and affordable for you.

Before thinking about getting professional help, check first if you can resolve the problem by yourself.? Sometimes, you may be able to fix your own financial difficulties. But if you decide it is best to hire a debt relief program, and then make sure that you do your part in protecting yourself so you don?t become the next victim of an avoidable scam!

Fleeing Muslims seek food, shelter after Myanmar sectarian chaos

PAUKTAW, Myanmar (Reuters) - Boatloads of Muslims struggled to reach refugee camps and sought safety on islands and in coastal villages on Saturday as Myanmar tried to put out the fires of a week of sectarian unrest that has shaken its fragile democratic transition.

Dozens of rickety wooden vessels packed with the stateless Rohingya Muslims who fled clashes with Buddhists in western Rakhine state had reached land by Saturday after two days at sea, but nine boats were still unaccounted for, according to several Rohingya refugee sources reached by telephone.

New York-based Human Rights Watch called on Myanmar's reformist government to protect Muslims from "vicious" attacks, and released satellite images of the "near total destruction" of a once-thriving coastal community reduced to ashes around Kyaukpyu, an industrial zone important to Chinese energy interests.

The United Nations has warned that Myanmar's fledgling democracy could be "irreparably damaged" by a week of communal violence which has come five months after machete and arson attacks killed more than 80 people and displaced at least 75,000 in the same region.

No new clashes were reported on Saturday, a day after the Home Minister said the government was prepared to declare martial law and emergency rule in the region if violence escalated. A committee of lawmakers led by Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi called on Friday for security reinforcements and swift legal action against those behind fighting in which at least 67 people were killed.

The chaos suggests the quasi-civilian government is struggling to contain historic ethnic and religious tensions between Rohingyas and ethnic Rakhines that were suppressed during five decades of military rule that ended last year.

Few Rohingyas were able to reach overstretched refugee camps, and some said boats were turned back by security forces when they tried to join other Rohingyas, said by a government official to be receiving food and water in the relative safety of the state capital Sittwe.

Myanmar's estimated 800,000 Rohingyas are officially stateless, and regarded by the government of the majority Buddhist country as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, rather than one of its 135 official ethnic groups, as a result of which it denies them citizenship.

Bangladesh does not recognise them either, and the United Nations has referred to them as "virtually friendless".

A Rakhine government spokesman put the death toll at 112 as of Friday, but within hours, state media revised it to 67 killed, 95 wounded and nearly 3,000 houses destroyed from October 21 to 25.

DEATH TOLL "UNDERESTIMATED"

That toll could be far higher, said Human Rights Watch, citing "allegations from witnesses fleeing scenes of carnage and the government's well-documented history of underestimating figures that might lead to criticism of the state."

Buddhists searched on Saturday for bodies of ethnic Rakhines killed in the clashes and some villages in Paukthaw, where both Muslims and Buddhists had lived, were left abandoned.

Soldiers stood guard close to the burned-out homes that bore the scars of the latest chaos in a region where tensions between the groups have simmered for years.

"The bodies of 16 Rakhines were found in the sea. They had died during the attacks on Thursday. We're looking for more bodies," said Tun Mein Thein of the Wan Lark foundation, an organisation assisting Buddhist refugees. The information could not be independently verified.

Rohingyas refugee sources said many of those on boats had resisted efforts by security forces to move them to A-Ngu-Maw island, fearing retribution by Rakhine Buddhists.

Human Rights Watch said more than 811 buildings and houseboats were razed in Kyaukpyu, about 120 km (75 miles) south of Sittwe. Kyaukpyu is crucial to China's most strategic investment in Myanmar: twin pipelines that will carry oil and natural gas through the town on the Bay of Bengal to China's energy-hungry western provinces.

A boat carrying 120 Muslims from Kyaukpyu was on Thursday intercepted by Rakhines, who killed the men and raped the women, the advocacy group Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK said in a statement, describing the attacks as "ethnic cleansing". This claim could not be verified.

"We have confirmed reports that hundreds of people have been killed and the government must be aware of that," said Tun Khin, the group's president.

Many of those expelled from Kyaukpyu are not Rohingya but Muslims from the officially recognized Kaman minority, said Chris Lewa, director of the Rohingya advocacy group, Arakan Project. "It's not just anti-Rohingya violence anymore, it's anti-Muslim," she said.

It was unclear what set off the latest arson and killing that started on Sunday. In June, tension flared after the rape and murder of a Buddhist woman that was blamed on Muslims, but there was no obvious trigger this time.

Miller and No. 9 Ohio St beat Penn St 35-23

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) ? Braxton Miller was his usual self, running for 134 yards and accounting for three touchdowns a week after getting knocked out of a game, leading No. 9 Ohio State to a 35-23 victory against Penn State on Saturday.

Ryan Shazier returned an interception 17 yards for a score early in the third quarter that gave the Buckeyes (9-0, 5-0 Big Ten) the lead for good, and the Nittany Lions (5-3, 3-1) and coach Bill O'Brien had their five-game winning streak snapped in a matchup of the Big Ten's bowl-banned perennial powers.

Miller missed the fourth quarter against Purdue after a hard tackle sent him to the hospital with a case of whiplash. He declared himself good to go by the midweek.

Was he ever. The Heisman campaign can resume.

The sophomore quarterback reached 100 yards rushing for the sixth time this season, carrying 25 times, and only avoiding contact when it was convenient. He also passed for 143 yards.

Matt McGloin and the Nittany Lions had turned an 0-2 start into a reason for Nittany Lions fans to get excited about football again.

It felt like a big game in Happy Valley, something many thought wouldn't happen this year after Penn State was hit with crippling NCAA sanctions for the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal.

But the Nittany Lions weren't quite ready to step up in competition.

Miller's second 1-yard touchdown run in the final 3:40 of the third quarter put Ohio State up 28-10.

McGloin and Penn State then rolled to an 18-play touchdown drive that he finished with a 2-yard pass to Matt Lehman to make it 28-16 with 9:49 left in the fourth quarter. The 2-point conversion try was stopped.

McGloin finished 27 for 45 for a career-high 327 yards.

With plenty of time to pull off a comeback, the Penn State crowd roared and waved pom-poms as Ohio State started its next drive backed up to its 8.

A couple of tough runs by Miller got the Buckeyes off the goal line. Then on third-and-3 from the 28, Miller hit Jake Stoneburner in stride over the middle, and the wide receiver was gone. The 72-yard touchdown made it 35-16.

The Nittany Lions added one more touchdown, almost as a thank you to all of the fans ? and there were plenty in the crowd of 107,818 ? who stayed to the end.

Ohio State's season of what-could-have-been rolls on, back home to play Illinois next week. After that the Buckeyes take a week off, and then finish the season at Wisconsin and home for Michigan.

The Buckeyes could have been thinking Big Ten championship, even BCS title.

But Ohio State's decision not to impose a bowl ban last season, when the Buckeyes went 6-6 and lost in the Gator Bowl, before the NCAA weighed in on the tattoo-for-memorabilia scandal, led to Urban Meyer's first team in Columbus, Ohio, being left out of the postseason.

The Big Ten will give the Buckeyes a trophy if they win the Leaders Division, a race which they have firmly under control.

Other than that, all Ohio State can do is win'em all and hope for the best when the final AP poll of the season comes out in January. Though an idle December would make it easier for Miller to get to the Heisman Trophy ceremony on Dec. 8

He added to his highlight reel with his first touchdown run.

Miller pulled the ball back just as teammate Carlos Hyde was engulfed by Penn State's Sean Stanley, did a two-step ? one forward and jump back ? to allude a defender, and then dived past another into the end zone. Officially, the play covered a yard, and it made the score 21-10 Ohio State with 3:30 left in the third quarter.

Before that, two of the better offenses in the Big Ten traded punts for most of the first half.

Penn State finally turned one of those punts into points.

Mike Hull cut through the Ohio State protection and blocked Ben Buchanan's punt a couple of yards away from the goal line. Hull tried to grab the ball that bounced on onto his chest as he lay on the ground, instead knocking it into the end zone where Michael Yancich recovered for a 7-0 lead with 6:15 left in the half.

Penn State forced another punt, but a holding penalty on the Nittany Lions converted the fourth down for Ohio State and Miller took advantage. His 33-yard keeper got the Buckeyes a first-and-goal at the 6. Three runs by Hyde made it 7-7 with 34 seconds left in the half.

Conoco quarterly profit dips, but beats estimates

(Reuters) - ConocoPhillips reported a lower third-quarter profit on Thursday that beat analysts' estimates, as it produced more crude than expected from high-margin fields such as the Eagle Ford and Bakken.

Shares of the U.S. oil and gas company rose 2 percent to $57.11 in premarket trading.

Conoco and other large oil companies like Exxon Mobil Corp have been investing more heavily in North American shale formations like the Eagle Ford in south Texas and the Bakken in North Dakota in a bid to boost higher-priced oil production.

"The ramp up in the Eagle Ford is on track or exceeding the market's expectations," said Fadel Gheit, oil analyst at Oppenheimer. "They delivered on everything they said they would, and more."

Third-quarter profit was $1.8 billion, or $1.46 per share, compared with $2.6 billion, or $1.91 per share, in the same period a year earlier.

Excluding items related to asset sales and taxes, the Houston-based company had a profit of $1.44 per share. Analysts on average had expected $1.19.

Oil and gas output in the quarter was 1.53 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (BOE), down from 1.54 million a year earlier. Analysts at Barclays had forecast 1.52 million BOE per day.

Conoco said its fourth-quarter production will increase on a sequential basis, as the company speeds the pace of drilling in the Eagle Ford and more output is expected from its Canadian oil sands properties.

"Our projects and drilling programs continue to perform, our exploration activities are building momentum and our asset sales are progressing," Ryan Lance, Conoco's chief executive, said in a statement.

Home-Based Crafts Businesses ? How to Buy Supplies Wholesale ...

People with home-based crafts businesses have had problems obtaining supplies at wholesale cost for the past thirty years. One reason is that most crafters who sell on a part-time basis at the retail level don?t sell enough of any one thing to justify ordering supplies in the large quantities many suppliers demand as a minimum order. No one has all the answers for the problem of how and where to buy raw materials and other craft supplies wholesale, but there are many ways to obtain supply source information:

- Learn who makes or sells what you need. Read trade magazines and other publications for artists and crafters. (Note: Trade magazines are not found on newsstands, but are available by subscription and often found in libraries. Selected publications are listed in Resources.)

- Check your library. Look for the Thomas Register of American Manufacturers, which lists products by category, trade, and brand names along with the names of companies that make them. When requesting a company?s wholesale catalog (which is rarely free), type your letter on business stationery. Otherwise you may be perceived as a hobby business that does not qualify for wholesale prices.

- Subscribe to periodicals that contain supplier ads. One of the best magazines for this kind of information is Craft Supply Magazine, a trade magazine aimed specifically at the gift producer market.

- Attend trade shows. Sponsors of the Hobby Industry Association (HIA) shows have finally recognized craft designers and ?converters of craft materials for the gift market? as a legitimate market. Although such buyers no longer have to go through all sorts of machinations to gain entry to an HIA show, it is still up to individual exhibitors as to whether or not wholesale orders will be accepted from them. ?Not every supplier exhibiting in such shows is interested in dealing with professional crafters (PCs), even when they can meet minimum order requirements,? an industry insider told me. ?Although PCs, for the most part, order in larger quantities than small retail shops, some suppliers fear their invoice won?t be paid. That?s why it?s important to dress and act like a business person at such shows. Don?t give suppliers a reason to doubt you won?t pay your bill. Don?t go up to them and meekly say, ?Will you sell to me?? Instead, state firmly, ?I?m ready to place my order; are you ready to take it???

- Join an organization. Membership in some organizations enables artists and crafters to buy supplies in bulk with other members.

- Search the Internet and World Wide Web. Teresa Niell says she is finding the Internet to be a great way to find the supplies she needs to make topiaries, wreaths, and related items. ?It?s a wonderful resource tool. You can search for almost any kind of material and come up with something. Since crafters are quick to share information, message boards are also a great way to find a certain product you?re looking for.?

- Other tips. In the beginning, when your supply needs are small, your best bet may be to concentrate on finding suppliers who offer bulk or special-discount prices. Craft magazines often carry ads of such companies. Since retail shops everywhere are hurting for business these days, some might offer a 20 to 30 percent discount on larger-than-usual orders. In fact, if you need fabric or fur, you might come out ahead buying this way instead of at full wholesale.

?Buying wholesale requires a large-quantity purchase and minimum orders at each wholesale house,? says teddy bear designer Jan Bonner. ?Fabrics purchased in 20-yard bolts are expensive, and you could easily be stuck with a large portion unsold at the end of a season. Patterns in fabrics and colors also change each season. Calico in style in the 1970s gave way to chintz fabrics in the 1980s, then to dark backgrounds in the 1990s. I?ve decided it?s better to buy some amounts on sale at 30 percent off than large amounts at 50 percent off. This enables me to achieve a variety of color for less cash output.?

Jan adds that you can always find a good buy on supplies, but never can replace the capital used to buy them. ?Always be careful to have an adequate supply of money on hand to make a quick move in the marketplace,? she cautions.

Dollmaker Rita Stone-Conwell has learned not to buy supplies in large quantities until she knows an item is going to be a good seller. ?I also learned that just because a color or style interests me, it does not mean others will buy it.? After a lifetime of sewing, Barbara Sharpe says her most expensive lesson was purchasing a huge stash of fabrics for projects never started. The fabric retailers have promoted the adage that ?She who dies with the most fabrics wins.? ?Wrong,? she says. ?Fabric does not earn interest.?

Fabric does earn respect, however, as Maria Nerius will confirm. She still cringes when she relates this story: ?I was fascinated with a product called lamb?s fleece. When it came on the market, I immediately bought $600 worth?a big investment for me?because I was so excited about working with this wonderful new material. I forgot only one thing: I?m allergic to wool. In my excitement, fleece and wool just didn?t correlate. Thirty minutes after handling the material, I was covered with red blotches and had to go to the hospital. I ended up giving all of this material to the senior center.?

LLANO DE CHAJNANTOR, Chile (AP) ? Earth's largest radio telescope is growing more powerful by the day on this remote plateau high above Chile's Atacama desert, where visitors often feel like they're planting the first human footprints on the red crust of Mars.

The 16,400-foot (5,000-meter) altitude, thin air and mercurial climate here can be unbearable. Visitors must breathe oxygen from a tank just to keep from fainting. Winds reach 62 mph (100 km) and temperatures drop to 10 below zero (minus 25 Celsius).

But for astronomers, it's paradise.

The lack of humidity, low interference from other radio signals and closeness to the upper atmosphere make this the perfect spot for the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, or ALMA, which is on track to be completed in March.

So far, 43 of the 66 radio antennas have been set up and point skyward like 100-ton white mushrooms. Linked as a single giant telescope, they pick up wavelengths of light longer than anything visible to the human eye, and combine the signals in a process called interferometry, which gives ALMA a diameter of 9.9 miles (16 kilometers). The result is unprecedented resolution and sensitivity ? fully assembled, its vision will be up to ten times sharper than NASA's Hubble Space Telescope.

"What surprises me is what is being observed. Until now, we haven't had such a capable observatory. We've never been able to observe with such resolution, such accuracy," says David Rabanus, ALMA's instrument group manager.

More than 900 teams of astronomers competed last year to be among the first to use the array, and scientists from around the world are already taking turns at the joysticks.

They're looking for clues about the dawn of the cosmos ? from the coldest gases and dust where galaxies are formed and stars are born, to the energy produced by the Big Bang. So-called birthing clouds of cold gases and debris can look like ink stains with other telescopes, but ALMA can show their detailed structures.

ALMA also reaches farther beyond Earth's nitrogen-blue skies than any other radio telescope and has already captured images different from anything seen before by visible-light and infrared telescopes. After a 2003 groundbreaking, scientific operations began last year with a quarter of ALMA's final capacity.

Seeing in three dimensions made possible the recent discovery of a spiral structure surrounding R Sculptoris, providing new insights about how dying red giant stars implode and send off raw material that will later form into other stars. Those results were published in the scientific journal Nature. ALMA has even been able to detect sugar molecules in the gas surrounding a star about 400 light years away, proving the existence of life's building blocks there.

Jointly funded and managed by the United States, Canada, the European Union, Japan and Taiwan, the $1.5 billion project is an engineering triumph that launches Chile, already home to some of the world's largest optical telescopes, to the forefront of ground-based space exploration.

"We're talking about the United Nations of astronomy joined for a billion dollar adventure. Scientists are like kids playing with very expensive toys and these ones are technological developments that could change the world," said Jose Maza, a University of Chile astronomy professor.

But this space race isn't over: Australia and South Africa are competing to build The Square Kilometer Array, combining thousands of small dishes to create a radio telescope 50 times more sensitive than ALMA once completed in 2024.

ALMA's parts are shipped from all over the world and assembled at a warehouse 9,514 feet (2,900 meters) above sea level. The precision is micrometric. The telescope employs reflecting panels that must be aligned and glued so accurately to withstand each winter's subzero temperatures and bounce radio waves within a hundredth of a millimeter's precision.

The dishes are hauled up to their final destination by two custom-made 28-wheel transporters that roar along snaky roads, lined with oversized cactuses and grazing vicunas below the snow-peaked Licancabur volcano. The trip is only 22 miles (35 kilometers), but it takes five hours for the huge platforms to reach the plateau.

Each antenna is perched on a rotating steel pedestal with precisely installed copper lining to protect from lightning. Each dish has a sensitive receiver made of carbon fiber to avoid thermal expansion. The structures, 40 feet (12-meter) tall, lean closer together or farther apart as astronomers zoom in or get wider views. The ALMA correlator, which calculates more than 20 quadrillion operations per second, is the fastest computer ever used at an astronomical site. It compiles the data into a single large view.

"We came from the caves and we're here now just because of curiosity," said Rieks Jager, system integration manager at ALMA, as he stepped out of the control room near the "silent area" military-style barracks where astronomers sleep during the day. "It's not always clear what we study, or whether it's useful for society, but overall it's absolutely essential for humankind."

It's a quantum leap forward since Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei invented one of the first telescopes in the 17th century, discovering sunspots and valleys on the surface of the moon.

"Astronomy has been with us forever and we still have so much more to go," said Maza, the astronomy professor. "If we hadn't asked ourselves so many questions by looking at the stars we would still be ... hunting buffalos. At the end, all of man's development comes from the act of leaving the stones aside and looking upward at the twinkling stars and asking, 'Why?' "

ALMA reminds Juan Rodrigo Cortes, one of the observatory's astronomers, of a phrase from Antoine De Saint Exupery's book "The Little Prince" ? "What is essential is invisible to the eyes."

"What's essential here is the material that creates stars, galaxies, clouds, that doesn't emit light visible to our eyes, but goes way beyond the infrared at much longer wavelengths, and that's why our eyes can't see it," Cortes said. "ALMA gives us eyes."

Scientists and researchers are willing to go to extremes to catch a glimpse of the universe through those eyes.

As many as 500 people at a time live at 9,500 feet above sea level in shipping containers modified as trailers. Alcohol is banned due to the sensitivity of the equipment, and those caught drinking after trips to the nearby city of San Pedro de Atacama must sleep at the security checkpoint while they dry out. Their shifts can last 12 hours daily for eight straight days.

Even the weather is unpredictable. Although the clearest of skies are the norm, this year, scientists have had to deal with mudslides, floods and thunderstorms. But most of the time, they seem to be far removed from the rest of the world.

Inside ALMA's control room, German astronomer Rainer Mauersberger had no idea he had put his orange sweater on backward. He was thinking about the formation of galaxies, hoping perhaps to spot a black hole.

"This project has to do with the origin of our life and our future," Mauersberger explained as he sat near a long table full of Halloween masks, used by the scientists to share a light moment or a laugh to break up the long days and nights of stargazing.

"It's about how can we predict our future climates, the evolution of the earth, the sun, our species," he said. "We know more about our universe, our culture, than we ever dreamt of 100 years ago. Our prediction is that the real surprises here will come with things that we can't even begin to imagine."

Why Prospective College Students Should Be Using Net Price Calculators

While the average published tuition prices at colleges and universities have increased since the 2007-2008 school year, the average student has not shouldered the brunt of the rising costs, a new study has found.

The average in-state student at a four year public college is paying about $440 more in today's dollars for tuition and fees in the 2012-2013 school year than students did in 2007-2008, according to estimates in the College Board's "Trends in College Pricing 2012" study, released yesterday. And for students at private colleges, which tend to be more expensive, the average net price for tuition and fees decreased by $490 in inflation-adjusted dollars.

[See which colleges are cutting or freezing tuition.]

Grant aid from the federal government, state governments, and institutions themselves, in addition to education tax benefits, helped to absorb some of the tuition increases, according to the report's calculations and estimates.

Though average published in-state tuition jumped from $6,810 in 2007-2008 to $8,660 this year at four year publics, aid such as Pell grants and tax benefits helped to keep the increase in average net price for tuition and fees relatively small when comparing the two time periods. (The study notes, however, that federal aid was "unusually large" from 2008-2009 to 2010-2011, and that net tuition price has increased annually since.)

At private schools, published tuition rose from an average of $25,760 to $29,060 over the five years but was accompanied by more institutional aid--demonstrating that sticker prices don't always tell the full story to prospective students and their parents.

"Although it is generally the published prices that make headlines, it is the net prices paid by individual students that matter most for college access and affordability," write study authors Jennifer Ma and Sandy Baum.

[Find out how to pay for college.]

As the report notes, not every student will be charged the average net price for tuition. According to the College Board, about one third of students pay a school's published tuition price in full. Prospective college students and their parents can estimate their own cost of college by using net price calculators--tools which, by federal mandate, every college is required to post online.

"It's important that families look at what's been happening to average net prices; but they also, for those close to college age, should look at specific institutions and apply their own financial situation to see what their expected net price will be," College Board author Ma recommends.

The calculators require time, knowledge of family finances, and, often, some paperwork as families work to ballpark total costs. While the College Board statistics cited above focus solely on net tuition and fees, college net price calculators take into account the total cost of college for one year, including room, board, and other expenses, when creating individual estimates.

[See what else you need to know about using the calculators.]

Net price calculators aren't always easy to find. In a random sample of 50 colleges, about 25 percent of schools did not include a way to access the calculator on their financial aid websites, according to "Adding It All Up 2012: Are College Net Price Calculators Easy to Find, Use, and Compare?," a report from The Institute for College Access and Success (TICAS).

"Net price calculators are one of several new tools that can help bring more transparency to the process of deciding where to apply and how to pay for it, but you need to know they're out there and be able to find and use them easily," notes Lauren Asher, president of TICAS.

Still, with a little digging, students and parents should be able to find most colleges' net price calculators to begin experimenting. U.S. News has collated the net price calculators of the top 300 colleges to help launch your investigation.

Goldman says "never seriously" looked at selling commodities biz

(Reuters) - Goldman Sachs Group Inc said on Tuesday the bank's senior management had never "seriously" looked at spinning off all or part of its commodities business, as the bank faces tougher regulations that restrict its trading.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday that Goldman had held "preliminary internal discussions" in recent years about splitting off its commodities business. The newspaper cited people briefed on the discussions in its report.

"While we constantly evaluate all our businesses, senior management never seriously looked at spinning out all or part of our commodity business," Goldman Sachs spokeswoman Sophie Bullock said in an email.

The news comes as Morgan Stanley , Goldman's traditional rival in commodity markets on Wall Street, is weighing a possible sale of a majority stake in its commodities business to Qatar's sovereign wealth fund.

Wall Street banks, including Goldman, Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan , face tougher regulatory restrictions on proprietary trading under the Volcker rule contained in the Dodd-Frank Act.

Their ownership of physical commodity assets, like power plants, oil storage tanks and metals warehouses, are also in jeopardy after Goldman and Morgan Stanley converted to Bank Holding Companies at the peak of the financial crisis.

The Bank Holding Company Act allows banks to trade in physical commodity markets, but restricts their ownership of the underlying assets.

The Volcker rule limits banks to largely trading on behalf of their clients.

Baby Shower Crafternoons - Miss Thrifty

I want to show you a couple of baby shower ideas this week.

Last year when I was pregnant with Thrifty Baby, I didn?t have a baby shower. They aren?t really my bag; in fact, the baby shower is one of the American imports I like least. We had a baby cake reveal party for close family instead: no presents, but a lot of fun.

If only I had met Emily sooner!

Emily and her business partner Sam are a craft powerhouse called?Love Me Sew, with?an online shop selling beautiful fabrics. Love Me Sew also holds crafternoons and craft workshops in and around Leeds ? and recently, baby shower crafternoons have been taking off.

I would have loved a baby shower crafternoon. It?s very simple: you get together with your friends and family one afternoon and, with the help of the Love Me Sew ladies, create a quilt for the new baby.

Everyone stitches a square, with all levels of experience catered to. People come up with their own designs beforehand, and these are sketched out by Love Me Sew in advance. The fabric, sewing machines and all the crafty bits and pieces are provided on the day.

I understand that tea and scones are obligatory also. This crafternoon was a surprise for the mum-to-be. She ended up stitching the tree (above): with its felt trunk and different-coloured leaves, it symbolised the start of her own family tree.

Afterwards, all the squares are taken away and stitched together into a beautiful quilt like this one.

The names of the quilters are also featured, on a white square sewn onto the back of the quilt. After the baby is born, his or her name, weight and date of birth are also embroidered there.

Here is the very cute baby on her finished quilt. What a lovely gift!

Love Me Sew?s baby shower crafternoons start from ?35 per person, for a minimum of six people, with materials included. It?s probably more than you would spend on a baby shower gift, but what a treat to be part of something so special and so lasting. Visit the Love Me Sew website for further information.

Thanks to Emily for permission to use these pictures. If you are as taken with baby shower crafternoons as I am, but live nowhere near Leeds, perhaps you could enlist the help of your craftiest friend or relative, and plan something similar?

Gender of baby beluga whale revealed

Brenna Hernandez / Shedd Aquarium

The beluga calf has been improving her milk-intake efficiency and latching onto mom an average of 20 minutes a day.

By Laura T. Coffey, TODAY contributing editor

Back in August, we here at Animal Tracks were cheered to announce the birth of a bouncing baby beluga whale at Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. At the time, no one knew the gender of the baby; he or she was being allowed to bond with mom without any physical interaction with human handlers.

The time finally arrived for the whopping infant to receive a physical examination, and on Tuesday aquarium officials issued a happy announcement: It?s a girl!

The female beluga calf will make her public debut with her mother, Mauyak (pronounced ?MAH-yak?), at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 26. Aquarium guests should have plenty to see: The 5-foot-long calf already weighs more than 205 pounds and has been gaining 12 to 15 pounds a week.

Low-Wage Factory Jobs In Haiti Not 'Perfect' But A Start For Recovery, Clinton Says

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton who is also the U.N. special envoy to Haiti, joined Haiti's President Michel Martelly at the opening ceremony for the park in the fishing village of Caracol on the north coast.

?We had learned that supporting long-term prosperity in Haiti meant more than providing aid,? Sec. Clinton told a group of investors at a luncheon following the event, the Associated Press reported.

?It required investments in infrastructure and the economy that would help the Haitian people achieve their own dreams. So we shifted our assistance to investments to address some of the biggest challenges facing this country: creating jobs and sustainable economic growth.?

The Caracol Industrial Park is expected to create around 40,000 jobs in an area where subsistence farming and fishing are the only economic options available aside from migrating to more developed parts of the country, though many of those areas in the south were damaged by the 2010 earthquake.

The capital of Port-au-Prince was hit the hardest by the magnitude 7.0 quake and over 350,000 people are still living in tents and temporary shelters on the outskirts of the city. Furthermore, a cholera epidemic claimed over 7,000 lives in the aftermath of that disaster.

Indeed, the jobs are sorely needed in a country where unemployment was last recorded at over 40 percent in 2010, and where a vast majority of the people live below the poverty line.

South Korean garment company Sae-A Trading, Co. Ltd, has agreed to create 20,000 permanent jobs over the next six years and build 5,000 homes nearby for its workers, the BBC reported.

Sae-A has already hired and trained 1,000 workers and has made its first shipment of 67,000 garments to be sold at Wal-Mart stores, Sec. Clinton said.

Daniel Cho, a spokesman for Sae-A in Haiti, told the AP that the workers were being paid around $5 a day for eight hours of work.

Critics argue that the low wages and corporate tax rates will be more beneficial to foreign businesses and investors than the Haitian people.

?This is not a strategy that is meant to provide Haiti with any measure of sustainable development ... The only reason those industries come to Haiti is because the country has the lowest wages in the region,? Alex Dupuy, a Haiti-born sociologist who teaches at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, told the AP.

Sec. Clinton acknowledged that the project was not ?perfect.?

?What development project anywhere in the world is? And there will be frustration from time to time,? she said at the opening ceremony.

?But for all of the inevitable challenges, today and the development here represents a new opportunity for Haiti.?

In addition to the $124 million the U.S. government has invested in the project, it has built a 10 million-megawatt thermal plant which Sec. Clinton said would eventually provide 100,000 people in the region with access to electricity for the first time, adding that only 12 percent of the population of 10 million currently as such access.

She also mentioned that the construction of a new container port was in the planning stages.

While the U.S. government has made a significant investment in the project, Sec. Clinton emphasized that it would ultimately be up to the Haitian government to sustain and expand it, while providing more support and services for its people and an attractive environment for investment.

?In addition to effective government, Haiti needs a strong justice sector, free and fair elections, housing, energy, schools, health care -- all of which will serve the people of Haiti, but also attract even more investment,? she said.
