On Friday night, Emmy-winner Joan Rivers will delight DPAC patrons with her patented mixture of violets and vitriol

The Durham Performing Arts Center will present award-winning 79-year-old stand-up comedienne, actress, author, and reality-TV personalitypersonality Joan Rivers at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28th, in its 2,700-seat, state-of-the-art theater, in the American Tobacco District in downtown Durham, NC. Among many other honors, Rivers is a five-time Daytime Emmy Award nominee, who won the Outstanding Talk Show Host Emmy in 1990 for ?The Joan Rivers Show? (1989-93).

Born Joan Alexandra Molinsky on June 8, 1933, the daughter of Russian Jews who immigrated to Brooklyn, NY, Joan Rivers is famous for her raspy voice, waspish wit, and fearless, freewheeling, no-holds-barred commentary about her own foibles ? especially her multiple visits to the plastic surgeon ? and the foibles of her fellow celebrities, especially Hollywood types, whom she mercilessly skewers in her trademark New York accent.

Fifty-eight-year-old Brad Zimmerman, who describes himself as a ?Comedian, award-winning rapper, fantasy nerd, and reluctant grown-up,? will open the show; and Joan Rivers will start the fur flying at approximately 8:20 p.m.

Retiring during economic booms could cause financial hardships for retirees

The recent economic downturn and volatile financial markets have drastically reduced the retirement accounts of many current and future retirees. In a new study, a University of Missouri financial expert has found that many Americans choose to retire when the economic markets are peaking, an action that can, ironically, cause major problems for the long-term financial stability of retirees.

"Potential retirees often will first meet their targeted retirement savings goals during an up market and will be tempted to retire at that point," said Rui Yao, an assistant professor of personal financial planning in the College of Human Environmental Sciences at MU. "The problem with this strategy is that the economy runs in cycles, meaning that after a peak, the market will take a downturn. People who have retired shortly before an economic downturn run a serious risk of losing a significant portion of their retirement savings, which will shorten the longevity of their retirement income. This could result in many retirees outliving their retirement savings and facing financial hardships toward the end of their lives."

Yao recommends that potential retirees hold off on retiring immediately upon reaching their target savings goals, particularly during an economic boom. She says that potential retirees should retire during an economic downturn, as long as they have saved enough to be comfortable. That way, she says, once the markets recover, retirees' savings will increase above their initial target goals, which will create an adequate financial cushion for future economic downturns.

In the study, which was published in the Journal of Personal Finance and funded by a grant from Prudential Insurance Company of America, Yao examined data from the Health and Retirement Study, which is a national biannual survey conducted by the University of Michigan. The study reviewed the financial and retirement statuses of more than 4,000 households with retirement-aged Americans from 1992 to 2008. Yao found that the probability that retirement-eligible Americans chose to retire increased as the number of consecutive up market years increased. Every one percentage increase in market returns increased the probability of retirement by more than two percent.

Yao also found that working Americans with a retired spouse were more likely to retire than all other household types, including those with a working spouse and those without a spouse. Yao says this trend could also create potential financial problems.

"It makes sense that many married couples would want to retire around the same time," Yao said. "However, if both spouses decide to retire close to the end of an up market, the household would have little to no cushion should their retirement portfolios be affected by an economic downturn."

Ultimately, Yao believes these findings show the need for retirement planners, employers, and financial educators and practitioners to help pre-retirees better understand the challenges they face in order to reduce the likelihood of financial problems after retirement.

The best way to add value, comfort and a little style to your home is to carry out some home improvements. There are many things to consider when making the choice to alter your home. The following article should help you out with all your home improvement needs.

When it comes to home improvement projects, having fun is essential. Even though you should use care when doing a project, it?s important to enjoy it as well. If you don?t, you?ll probably make mistakes. If this describes you, think about hiring a professional.

Worn flooring should be refurbished or replaced. Some flooring options can be more costly, but the long term investment is well worth it. Replacing old carpet or out-dated linoleum can be all you need to create a new room feel. If you use hardwood or tile, you can add long-lasting value as well.

Does your flooring look dingy or worn? You can always put stick-on laminate on top of your old floors. Although some people might think this is cheap flooring, it can actually be very nice to look at. Additionally, this flooring is easy enough to lay down so that most people can do it on their own.

Think of how to properly dispose of any debris. Unless you have found a way to manage it ahead of time, debris resulting from home improvement projects can quickly interfere with your project. Lease a dumpster or find someone that has a large truck to help you clear the debris out so you can continue.

Buy windows that are double-glazed. They are costlier, but they lower energy bills and reduce noise significantly. When you are renovating your home, switch to these in order to save money and time. They will help keep a comfortable temperature in the home as well as a nice quiet atmosphere to live in.

Look to your kitchen when you want to get an idea of where to begin home improvements and updates. Use a solution of 2-to-one TSP and water to get rid on grease stains on the walls. You can get off any dirt or grease. Re-paint in beige colors; you are going to be surprised at how different the room looks when you are finished.

Before you sign any home improvement contract, make sure you take the time to read the contract. It may seem daunting, but you?ll need to make sure that everything within the paperwork is something you approve of. If you sign without realizing what the contract contains, you can lose a lot of time and money. Always get everything in writing. Never take the contractor?s word without the paperwork to back it up.

When considering home improvements, you should understand how long different types of materials, repairs and upgrades last. A new chimney, for example, can last up to a 100 years. By contrast, that fancy wooden deck will probably start to deteriorate after only 15 years. Vinyl floors will last twenty or more years but oak lasts around a 100. Consider all of these things as you plan a renovation, to determine if the money and energy you put out is worthwhile.

When you?re doing major home improvement work on your roof, choosing a reliable contractor is extremely important. Before agreeing to anything, it?s best to do a little research to find a good roofing company. You can check the BBB or do an online search for reviews from previous customers.

When considering any home improvement project, it is important to evaluate whether you can do it yourself, whether you can afford the costs, and whether the results you will achieve are worth it. Progress Software rises on 3Q adj. profit results

NEW YORK (AP) ? Shares of Progress Software climbed more than 10 percent Thursday after its third-quarter adjusted earnings results topped Wall Street's expectations.

THE SPARK: Late Wednesday, Progress Software Corp. reported fiscal third-quarter earnings of 9 cents per share on revenue of $107.2 million.

Excluding stock-based compensation, restructuring costs and other items, earnings were 31 cents per share. Analysts surveyed by FactSet forecast earnings of 23 cents per share on revenue of $113 million.

THE ANALYSIS: Aaron Schwartz of Jefferies says that Progress Software's quarterly results are a step in the right direction. The Bedford, Mass., company announced earlier this year that it planned to cut its workforce by 10 percent to 15 percent, shed 10 product lines and reduce costs.

Schwartz said in a client note that Progress Software did not give any updates on the product line sales, but maintained its prior forecast for the process to be complete by the mid-to-end of 2013.

The analyst reaffirmed a "Hold" rating and lowered the company's price target to $23 from $25.

SHARE ACTION: Progress Software Corp.'s stock gained $1.93, or 10.1 percent, to $21.09 in morning trading. The shares have traded in a range of $16.71 to $24.76 over the last year. For the year to date, the stock is down 3 percent.

Fashion shows travel continents and eras in Paris

PARIS (AP) ? Paris fashion has no boundaries and no borders.

Thursday's cultural melting pot of spring-summer 2013 shows was proof enough.

Curious designers, thirsty for new inspiration, ventured across the globe to bring new ideas and exotic cultures back to the catwalk.

Manish Arora traveled to northwestern India's Rajasthan to bring Paris a vibrant infusion of traditional Indian dress and lavish regal jewelry.

Balmain's creative nomad Olivier Rousteing, meanwhile, replaced last season's muse ? the Russian Empire's Faberge Egg ? to travel to the artisanal wicker-weavers of Cuba to give his in-vogue summer black collection a unique panache.

Barbara Bui, who also channeled black, joined the expedition with geometric American Indian prints and tribal-looking dresses and foulards.

Taking another tack, Nina Ricci, forever a romantic Parisian gamine, traveled decades back in time to produce a nostalgic show with a modern twist.

Friday's collections include Roland Mouret and Issey Miyake, as well as the debut ready-to-wear show for new Christian Dior designer Raf Simons.

BALMAIN

To welcome in next spring, some designers in Paris have said it with flowers. Balmain said it with wicker.

Never one to travel with the crowd, 27-year-old designer Olivier Rousteing used artisanal Cuban wicker-weaving as a vehicle for his signature graphic silhouettes.

Rousteing ? who on Thursday completed a full year at the helm of the iconic French fashion house ? possesses a roving eye for cultural artifacts. Strong shouldered, highly structured looks came with cropped tops, lashings of jewel and slices of torso at his Paris Fashion Week show.

Yet the high point was the wicker-embellished cropped jackets that growled like a fierce, feminine exoskeleton.

Rousteing's 3-D woven straw evoked a baroque mood, a feeling that was echoed by lavish diamond checkerboard patterns ? a replica of the polished marble flooring of the Versailles Palace.

No doubt Rousteing will pass his annual job review.

MANISH ARORA

India ? home to over a billion people and one of the most colorful cultures in the world ? is a limitless creative touchstone for designers. So it's surprising that Mumbai-born Manish Arora ? perhaps the subcontinent's most famous designer ? has not delved into its rich fashion encyclopedia before.

That is until now.

Arora presented a spicy and bohemian homage to his homeland for spring-summer 2013 at Paris Fashion Week.

But why now?

"Luckily, this year I was very attracted toward jewelry: Is there a better place to draw inspiration?" said Arora, dressed in a flamboyant gold top.

Arora took us by the bejeweled hand down a goldmine of revamped traditional Indian dress. Angrakha dresses with orange patterns were set of boldly with a shiny chainmail pant, alongside geometric prints of tigers, panthers and antelope.

However, the show was really about the jewelry, as sublime ornamentation reigned in some of the collection's more garish looks. At one point there were gasps as the Maharaja's daughter came down the catwalk: Resplendent in a standout gold face-band that circled the bottom of the eyes.

NINA RICCI

There's been nostalgia in the air at Nina Ricci of late.

This was certainly the case in Peter Copping's deceptively complex spring-summer 2013 show at Paris Fashion Week, which floated ethereally by and matched the vintage feeling of last season's show.

Perhaps the mood was set by the millions of falling cherry blossoms ? which mark the end of spring ? that opened the presentation.

Or perhaps it was the floaty chiffon tops, the gentle pleated skirts, the halter necks, the flowing fringing or the soft silhouettes that harked to bygone days of the 20's and 30's.

Although the show opened with black designs, it melted like winter into spring, shifting into dusty colors of silver gray, blush pink, red and pale lavender.

Touches like zippers kept it modern for an accomplished, commanding show ? the most feminine display so far this season in Paris.

But Copping needn't be feeling nostalgic himself ? this collection shows he has a bright future with the fashion house.

BARBARA BUI

"Black is back for summer," declared Barbara Bui, following her saleable, and typically feminine collection for spring-summer 2013.

The French-Vietnamese designer opened the show true to her word, with a series of sexy-looking black nappa ensembles.

Bui, known to have an eye on her youthful clientele, ticked the on-trend box with her gentle masculine tailored-jackets, which led the eye down provocatively to skintight pants or inches of leg.

Singing the spirit of spring's first bloom, Bui then let float by a diaphanous series of sheer organza blouses.

Fluttering layers and contrasting pockets endowed the cornflower blue and flesh colored looks an interesting textural play.

Unfortunately, the message of harmony got lost by the end ? diluted by a confusing series of geometric American Indian patterns with conflicting silhouettes.

CERRITOS, Calif. (AP) ? While the man behind an anti-Islam movie that ignited violence across the Middle East would likely face swift punishment in his native Egypt for making the film, in America the government is in the thorny position of protecting his free speech rights and looking out for his safety even while condemning his message.

It's a paradox that makes little sense to those protesting and calling for blood. To them, the movie dialogue denigrating the Prophet Muhammad is all the evidence needed to pursue justice ? vigilante or otherwise ? against Nakoula Bassely Nakoula, an American citizen originally from Egypt.

In America, there's nothing illegal about making a movie that disparages a religious figure. And that has the Obama administration walking a diplomatic tight rope less than two months before the election ? how to express outrage over the movie's treatment of Islam without compromising the most basic American freedom.

"The thing that makes this particularly difficult for the United States is that ... we treat what most of us would refer to as hate speech as constitutionally protected speech and Americans don't appreciate, I think, how unusual this position seems in the rest of the world," said Lawrence Rosenthal, a professor at Chapman University's School of Law in Orange, Calif.

The situation also raises vexing questions about how far the government can and should go to protect someone who exercises their First Amendment right. In the past, for example, police have stood guard to ensure Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan could march without being attacked for their views.

But Nakoula's case invites scrutiny because the free speech he exercised with the film "Innocence of Muslims" has had such far-reaching and violent implications.

If the government were to overtly protect Nakoula, it could be seen by some as tacit approval of the film, and further enflame protests. Leaving him to fend for himself could have deadly consequences. There are examples of violence against others who have written or spoken against Muhammad.

So far, the government has acknowledged offering very limited assistance. Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies escorted Nakoula to an interview with federal probation officials. They did so in the dead of night and allowed Nakoula to cover his face. And early Monday, deputies answered his family's request for help leaving the house where they'd been holed up for five days so they could reunite with the 55-year-old filmmaker. All remain in hiding.

Department spokesman Steve Whitmore stressed the agency is not providing protective custody. He referred questions to federal authorities, who have declined to comment.

Jody Armour, a professor at the University of Southern California's Gould School of Law, said it's "not unusual at all for the government to step in and give a citizen in distress or danger special protection, but it can't unlimited. They're going to have to strike a balance."

A 14-minute trailer for the film posted on YouTube sparked violence in the Middle East, including an attack in Libya in which a U.S. ambassador was killed. Nakoula, a Coptic Christian and American citizen who served federal prison time for check fraud, told The Associated Press in a short interview last week that he was involved in management and logistics for the anti-Islamic film. Federal officials, however, told the AP they have concluded he was behind the movie.

Furor over the film has been widespread. Bahrain protesters used Twitter to organize demonstrations that included burning American flags in the nation that hosts the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet. Pakistan's conservative Islamist parties sent out text messages, mosque announcements and made phone calls to bring out protest crowds, including about 1,000 people in the northwestern city of Peshawar on Sunday and hundreds who rushed the U.S. consulate in Karachi, sparking clashes with police in which one demonstrator was killed.

"Yes, we understand the First Amendment and all of this stuff," wrote Khalid Amayreh, a prominent Islamist commentator and blogger in Hebron on the West Bank. "But you must also understand that the Prophet (for us) is a million times more sacred than the American Constitution."

Were he in his native Egypt, Nakoula could be charged with "insulting religion," a crime punishable by up to three years in prison or could face the more serious charge of "upsetting national security," which carries a life sentence.

In America, the government can't even order that the video be removed from YouTube. All it can do is ask. And so far, parent company Google has declined, saying the video was within its guidelines for content. The company did restrict access to the video in certain countries, including Egypt, Libya and Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation.

"This can be a challenge because what's OK in one country can be offensive elsewhere," the company said in a statement.

That's precisely the point about the First Amendment, Armour said.

"The reason it is a constitutionally protected interest is precisely because it may prove unpopular," he said. "Words and images don't just convey information, they are attached to consequences. That's when we really have to ask ourselves, 'What price are we willing to pay for that First Amendment interest?' And these are the times that really test our convictions."

In 1975, former CIA agent Philip Agee published a book detailing agency operations and disclosing the names of a number of CIA agents working undercover overseas, Rosenthal said. Even in that instance, the U.S. government didn't press criminal charges but instead revoked Agee's passport and sued him for the book's profits.

"It's not clear that there is, on the books today, a law that makes what (Nakoula) did a crime," Rosenthal said. "This is an extremely difficult problem."

Indeed, federal officials have said they are looking at Nakoula only in the context of whether he violated his probation for the fraud conviction. Under terms of his sentence, he was banned from using computers or the Internet as part of his sentence.

The probation issue "gives the government a relatively low visibility way of prosecuting him but not technically for what he said and how inflammatory it was," Armour said. "It may be a way of splitting the baby."

From the Editor's Desk: That ain't Android, Samsung likes lists, Moto doing it right

Phil has vacated his desk for the week, and I've snuck in to fiddle with his radio, adjust his chair, and change all his bookmarks. They're big shoes to fill, but Alex and I can handle it. 

In any case, there's a lot of things that happened last week we should all stop and think about, and we can't let a bit of wanderlust keep it from happening.

• There was this little iPhone 5 thing that happened, and while we wait for it to actually become available we get to sift through everyone's opinion about why it's either a failure or the second coming. It's actually neither, but it does happen to be the perfect update for what some folks feel is the perfect phone. Anyone who expected magic unicorns with flames coming out their butt clearly hasn't been paying attention, as the iPhone 5 will look and feel like a better, faster, and this time around slightly bigger version of last years model. And it will sell millions. Samsung had a little fun with it in their recent ad, but they've forgotten that people don't buy the iPhone because of the specs. They buy it because of the whole Apple brand, and you can't fight that with a witty full color page.
• Sony looks to be up to their same old tricks, as the Xperia T will not be available unlocked (or in the US) until 2013. That's too late, and something better will be out by then. You have a website that can ship me a laptop in three days, Sony. Put your phones on it so people can buy them.
• Motorola, on the other hand, has surprised us all by doing exactly what they said they would do. If you are the type who likes to tinker, and love some Motorola hardware, grab the Developer Edition Razr M -- which went on sale last week right after the carrier launch. Nice job, Moto.
• There's that whole brouhaha over Acer, a Chinese Android-ish clone called Aliyun, and Google threatening to boot the manufacturer from the OHA if the two ever meet. It's a regular soap opera, complete with CEO's talking snarky on social media, software piracy, and about a million blogger opinions on why it's right or wrong. I can see why Google is doing what they are doing, but it still feels a bit like strong-arm tactics to me. Maybe Google needs to define the rules a bit better, or maybe Acer is trying to skirt them. This one isn't finished, and I look forward to more drama over the coming weeks.
• I'm trying to find a reason to not love the Kindle Fire HD 7. So far, I can't. It feels nothing like Android, but it's an awfully nice piece of equipment if you're in deep with Amazon. 
• Lots' of events this coming week, we have Motorola and Intel doing a thing in London on Tuesday, and Wednesday has LG and HTC both sharing something big with us in New York. We'll be at all three, seeing what there is to see and telling you guys all there is to know. 
• Finally, we see Jelly Bean has rolled out to all the Galaxy Nexus phones around the world, except one. Come on Verizon, this is getting a bit ridiculous. We understand that there are some radio issues that need worked out, but why not send out the updated OS with the old radio while you work on it? I'm sure a few people with the LTE Galaxy Nexus would appreciate the bone. Don't keep Google's work out of everyone's hands while you sort out yours.

A few things to think about, for sure. Phil will be back next week!

Murray claims maiden grand slam title

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Andy Murray became the first British man in 76 years to win a grand slam singles title on Monday, fighting off defending champion Novak Djokovic to win an epic U.S. Open final.

The Scotsman, beaten in his four previous grand slam finals, made it fifth time lucky with a nerve-jangling 7-6 7-5 2-6 3-6 6-2 victory at a windy Arthur Ashe Stadium where the players had to battle the elements as much as each other.

With both men struggling to control the ball in the gusting winds, and battling exhaustion in a slugfest that tied the record as the longest final at Flushing Meadows, Murray emerged triumphant, proving he belongs among the game's elite.

"I proved that I can win the grand slams," Murray said.

"And I proved that I can last four?and?a?half hours and come out on top against one of the strongest guys physically that tennis had probably seen, especially on this surface.

"(I learned) to not doubt myself physically and mentally from now on. I'm sure that would have a positive impact in the future."

After losing the first two sets, Djokovic suddenly raised his game to win the next two and force a deciding fifth set, seizing the momentum as Murray started to wilt.

But as Murray's supporters, including actor Sean Connery and Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson, shifted uneasily in their seats, the Olympic champion regained his composure and jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the final set before hanging on to seal an emotional victory.

"It was an incredibly tough match and obviously it felt great at the end," Murray said, adding that the word "relief" was foremost in his mind.

"I'm very happy that I managed to come through because if I had lost this one from two sets up, that would have been a tough one to take."

'WHAT IF?'

The 25-year-old, a survivor of the 1996 Dunblane school massacre, won a titanic first set that took almost an hour and a half to complete and ended in a 22-point tiebreaker, then added the second despite blowing a 4-0 lead.

Djokovic, already a five-times grand slam champion, rebounded to win the third set, then took the fourth to raise the prospect of becoming the first man since Pancho Gonzales in 1949 to win the final after losing the first two sets.

However, the world number two was unable to conjure another fightback as his legs started to cramp and Murray wrapped up victory after four hours and 54 minutes, the same time it took Mats Wilander to beat Murray's coach Ivan Lendl in the 1988 final.

"If I won that first set and had some chances maybe the match would go a different way," said Djokovic, who asked for a medical timeout to treat a groin strain just as Murray was about to serve for the title.

"But there is no reason to go back and say: 'What if? What if?'

"I had a great opponent today. He deserved to win this grand slam more than anybody."

Before Murray's triumph, the last British man to win a major was Fred Perry, who clinched his final grand slam in New York in 1936, the same year Britain's King Edward VIII abdicated to marry American socialite Wallis Simpson.

Murray emerged as the man most likely to end that barren run when he made it to the 2008 U.S. Open final, losing to Roger Federer in straight sets. He then made the Australian Open final in 2010 and again in 2011 but doubts about his mental toughness grew when he lost them both in straight sets.

The turning point came just a few months ago.

He made the final at Wimbledon and although he lost to Federer he won the first set and with a bit of luck, might have won the match.

A few weeks later, he avenged that loss by beating Federer in the Olympic final and now has a grand slam to go with his gold medal.

"When I was serving for the match, it's something that I realised how important that moment was for British tennis or British sport," Murray said.

"It's something that hasn't happened for a long time obviously in our country so I'm obviously proud that I managed to achieve it."

Obama denies snubbing Netanyahu amid chill

UPDATE 9:32 p.m. EDT: The White House denied late Tuesday that President Barack Obama had snubbed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by rejecting his request for a meeting when he comes to the annual United Nations General Assembly in New York in late September. A spokesman confirmed an Israeli news reports that the two leaders would not meet but cited the president's uncertain and hectic election-year schedule.

"Contrary to previous press reports, there was never any request for a meeting between the Prime Minister and President in Washington, nor was this request ever denied," U.S. National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor told reporters by email.

(Obama and Netanyahu later spoke by telephone for an hour "as a part of their ongoing consultations," the White House said. "The two leaders discussed the threat posed by Iran's nuclear program, and our close cooperation on Iran and other security issues. President Obama and Prime Minister Netanyahu reaffirmed that they are united in their determination to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, and agreed to continue their close consultations going forward," it said in a statement).

Vietor's comments and the conversation came?after Israel's Haaretz newspaper reported that the White House had turned down a request for talks. Haaretz said Netanyahu had asked Obama for a meeting during his stay in the United States and expressed a willingness to come to Washington to do so.?Earlier, when asked about that report, Vietor had said that the two leaders would not meet.

"The President arrives in New York for the UN on Monday, September 24?and departs on Tuesday, September 25. The Prime Minister doesn't arrive in New York until later in the week," Vietor said.

"They're simply not in the city at the same time. But the President and PM are in frequent contact and the PM will meet with other senior officials, including Secretary Clinton, during his visit."

The Haaretz report said the request was "declined" and that this "marks a new low" in relations between Obama and Netanyahu, who has publicly criticized Washington for not taking a harder line on Iran's nuclear program. (Still, Haaretz noted that "Netanyahu will spend only two and a half days on U.S. soil" and the White House "said that at this time Obama's schedule does not allow for a meeting.")

Mitt Romney has repeatedly accused Obama of shortchanging the relationship between the U.S. and Israel.

But a knowledgeable American official stressed it wasn't personal, saying Obama's schedule was in flux and emphasizing that he doesn't anticipate the president "will have any bilats [bilateral meetings with foreign leaders] at UNGA [the U.N. General Assembly] this year."

Still, Obama reportedly planned to appear on David Letterman on Sept. 18, the first day of the annual diplomatic gathering.

Republican Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham criticized Obama for not sitting down with Netanyahu, describing themselves as "surprised and disappointed."

"It is puzzling that the President can't make time to see the head of state of one of America's closest allies in the world," they said in a joint statement. "If these reports are true, the White House's decision sends a troubling signal to our ally Israel about America's commitment at this dangerous and challenging time, especially as Iran continues to work actively toward developing a nuclear weapons capability."

Gartner: Free apps dominate market, iOS App Store accounts for 25% of all downloads

If you'd just put down Angry Birds Space for a moment, maybe we could tell you that mobile apps are kind of a big deal. How big of a deal? How's about 45.6 billion downloads just this year -- that's a serious amount of birds lost in space! All of those downloads weren't just Angry Birds venturing into the final frontier, of course. Gartner, Inc's latest mobile report doesn't actually break down how much of that enormous number pertains to Rovio's hit franchise, but it does note that "free apps will account for nearly 90 percent of total mobile app store downloads in 2012." That means of the nearly 46 billion apps downloaded this year, approximately 40.6 billion were free. Additionally, an entire quarter of the apps downloaded in 2012 were via Apple's iOS app store -- but that isn't what's driving app growth, necessarily. "The number of apps available is driven by an increasing number of stores in the market today," Gartner research director Brian Blau notes. "These stores will see their combined share of total downloads increase, but demand for apps overall will still be dominated by Apple, Google, and Microsoft."

And the growth doesn't stop there. Blau predicts that 93 percent of all apps downloads will be of the free variety by 2016 -- also, we'll be downloading over 300 billion apps worldwide by the same year. Like we said, kind of a big deal.

Barack Obama will be, as this editorial board predicted a month ago, a one-term president. And, we repeat, in the end it will not even be close.

Why?

Because Obama and the Democrats, who open their national convention in Charlotte, N.C., on Tuesday, thereby launching the final stretch of the 2012 campaign, will be trying to sell a fanciful story of the Obama record that American voters will not buy.

It?s the economy, stupid.

That rallying cry, first given voice by campaign manager James Carville to campaign workers for Democrat Bill Clinton in 1992 to keep them focused in the race against incumbent President George H.W. Bush, is today the rightful rallying cry for Republican nominee Mitt Romney against Obama.

To be sure, Obama inherited a horrible economic mess in January 2009. The housing market had collapsed. Major financial institutions were failing, not to mention the auto industry. Unemployment and underemployment had skyrocketed. Consumer confidence had plummeted. The United States was in the most severe recession since the 1930s, with more than a few experts fearing further collapse into full-blown depression.

So what did the new president do? He let congressional Democrats write a pork-laden $800 billion economic stimulus plan that did a lot to stimulate Big Government across the land but did almost nothing to stimulate the private sector where jobs and economic growth are created. And he focused his own attention on pushing through a massive overhaul of the health care system, signed into law in March 2010, that will not improve the delivery of health care for sick people, and will still not make health insurance accessible to all who need it, but will make the national health care system even costlier than it is today. And the federal budget deficit, already at record levels when Obama took office, is now projected to double and triple into a financial black hole as far as the eye can see.

It was the economy, stupid. And Obama blew it.

Scientists design molecule that reverses some fragile X syndrome defects

ScienceDaily (Sep. 4, 2012) ? Scientists on the Florida campus of The Scripps Research Institute have designed a compound that shows promise as a potential therapy for one of the diseases closely linked to fragile X syndrome, a genetic condition that causes mental retardation, infertility, and memory impairment, and is the only known single-gene cause of autism.

The study, published online ahead of print in the journal ACS Chemical Biology September 4, 2012, focuses on tremor ataxia syndrome, which usually affects men over the age of 50 and results in Parkinson's like-symptoms -- trembling, balance problems, muscle rigidity, as well as some neurological difficulties, including short-term memory loss and severe mood swings.

With fragile X syndrome, tremor ataxia syndrome, and related diseases, the root of the problem is a structural motif known as an "expanded triplet repeat" -- in which a series of three nucleotides are repeated more times than normal in the genetic code of affected individuals. This defect, located in the fragile X mental retardation 1 (FMR1) gene, causes serious problems with the processing of RNA.

"While there is an abundance of potential RNA drug targets in disease, no one has any idea how to identify or design small molecules to target these RNAs," said Mathew Disney, a Scripps Research associate professor who led the study. "We have designed a compound capable of targeting the right RNA and reversing the defects that cause fragile X-associated tremor ataxia."

Preventing Havoc

In tremor ataxia syndrome, the expanded triplet repeat leads to the expression of aberrant proteins that wreak widespread havoc. The repeats actually force the normal proteins that regulate RNA splicing -- necessary for production of the right kind of proteins -- into hiding.

The compound designed by Disney and his colleagues not only improves the RNA splicing process, but also minimizes the ability of repeats to wreak havoc on a cell.

"It stops the repeat-associated defects in cell culture," Disney said, "and at fairly high concentrations, it completely reverses the defects. More importantly, the compound is non-toxic to the cells. It looks like a very good candidate for development, but we're still in the early stages of testing."

Overall, this study reinforces Disney's earlier findings showing it is possible to identify and develop small molecules that target these traditionally recalcitrant RNA defects. In March of this year, Disney published a study in the Journal of the American Chemical Society that described a small molecule that inhibited defects in myotonic dystrophy type 1 RNA in both cellular and animal models of disease.

"We've gotten very good at targeting RNA with small molecules, something a lot of people said couldn't be done," Disney pointed out. "Our approach is evolving into a general method that can be used to target any disease that is associated with an RNA, including, perhaps, fragile X syndrome itself."

The new compound also works as a probe to better understand how these repeats cause fragile X syndrome and how they contribute to tremor ataxia, Disney added.

In addition to Disney, authors of the study, "Small Molecule That Targets r(CGG) and Improves Defects in 2 Fragile X?Associated Tremor Ataxia Syndrome," include Biao Liu, Wang-Yong Yang, Tuan Tran, and Jessica L. Childs-Disney of Scripps Research; and Nicolas Charlet-Berguerand and Chantal Sellier of the Institut de G?n?tique et de Biologie Mol?culaire et Cellulaire (IGBMC), Institut National de la Sant? et de la Recherche M?dicale (INSERM), the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), and University of Strasbourg, Illkirch, France.

After turning the big 1-8 last week, teen bride Courtney Stodden was flooded with offers from producers of pornography.

Quickly making her views known, the wife of 52-year-old actor Doug Hutchinson tweeted, "No to porn...yes to @Playboy ;) xxx."

According to TMZ, sources say Courtney would not make the cut due to her "enhancements." However, self-described momager Krista Keller tells MailOnline, "We are in conversation with Playboy. They haven't even seen any of her photos yet."

Later, she told E! News, "TMZ doesn't know what they're talking about. Clearly, their 'sources' are different than ours."

Dakar floods uncover ancient jewellery: researchers

Pieces of pottery, iron tools and jewellery dating back thousands of years have been discovered in Dakar after recent torrential rains flooded some suburbs, university researchers told AFP on Monday.

Moustapha Sall, a lecturer and researcher at Dakar's Cheick Anta Diop university said he happened upon the items by chance during a visit to the suburb of Ouest-Foire in the north-east of the capital after the rains on August 26.

"While visiting the flooded zone, I stumbled upon... pieces of pottery, perforated shells reused as jewellery, iron scoria and small stones including blades which could have been used to cut or carve," said Sall.

"The water washed away the sand and revealed these archeological objects."

Sall said the area was home to several construction sites, where workers said they had come across pieces of pottery and shells, which could hinder any future archeological digs.

"We will do an analysis of the objects discovered and send them to a laboratory" at the university which specialises in dating historical items, Sall said.

Another researcher at the university, Alioune Deme, said the objects could date back between 2,000 and 7,000 BC.

Booker 2012: Swimming Home to The Lighthouse - Lizzy's Literary Life

Two novels from the 2012 Booker Longlist, both published by small independent presses,?with a lot more in common besides. Which is a strange thing to say given that Swimming Home concerns Kitty Finch, ?a mentally-disturbed girl stalking a family on holiday in France and The Lighthouse, Futh, a recently separated middle-aged chap who is taking a walking holiday in Germany.

Let?s look at some of the similarities ? they are short (SH 157 pages / TL 182 pages),?very readable (not a bad thing) and both issue?a health warning:? holidays can be bad for you!

The titles are drawn from?the central motif.? Swimming Home is a poem by written by Kitty Finch which she wishes to read to the man in the villa, JHJ (or Jozef as he is known to his wife), a poem which we never read, but the ramifications of which are shattering when JHJ finally hears it.? Similarly?The Lighthouse is a small silver?ornament, which used to house a bottle of perfume.? It was owned by Futh?s mother and it is the only thing of her which remained when she abandoned him and his father while he was a young child.? It is also while Futh?s father is expounding about the workings of lighthouses that his mother announces her intention of leaving them.

Which brings me to the subject of repetition, particularly in Moore?s novel.? Lighthouses, venus flytraps, bathrooms, escape routes, and the smell of camphor; all feature repeatedly.? It?s only in the final scene that they coalesce into the inevitable (but how I wish it could have been avoided) ending.? As Futh treks his way round Germany, his mind returns again and again to that picnic overlooking the lighthouse, each time adding more detail, more melancholy and sadness.? It?s a key to the man he becomes, marrying a woman with the same name as his mother, a woman who throughout their uncomfortable marriage continually reminds him that she is not his mother.

Damaged children are central to Swimming Home also.? Kitty Finch is serially depressed, manic maybe?? Jozef himself, a wartime child refugee from Poland has traumas in his past that remain hidden.? And Nina, the child of Jozef and Isabel?s fracturing marriage?has not?had the most stable of childhoods: her mother, a war correspondent,?more often absent than not, leaving her?to be brought up by an artistic and frequently adulterous father.? You have to wonder how? the events of this summer will resonate during her adulthood; events precipitated by her mother allowing?Kitty?Finch, who is found naked in the swimming pool, to stay.

Actually you have to wonder about a lot of things in Swimming Home because nothing is explicit.? Levy trusts her readers to fill in the blanks, and there are a goodly number of those: the motivations of her characters, particularly Isabel, and, more importantly the contents of that poem.? The ending, which we know will be?bad ? because when did inviting a stranger into the family circle ever end well ? is surprising.? I suspect though that?a second reading will reveal secrets and clues missed first time through skillful misdirection,? even if with hindsight, everything you need to know is in that suspense-driven first sentence.

When Kitty Finch took her hand off the steering wheel and told him she loved him, he no longer knew if she was threatening him or having a conversation.

Stylistically, the first sentence of The Lighthouse couldn?t be more different.

Futh stands on the ferry deck, holding onto the cold railings with his soft hands.?

Nothing sensational but an atmospheric beginning nonetheless.? The suspense in The Lighthouse builds slowly in a second narrative involving the landlady at the first B&B on Futh?s circular route ? the Hellhaus (German:?Lighthouse).? Futh?s holiday, apart from the melancholy of the past, is?a comic misadventure.? Unaware of the events at the B&B in his absence, as his feet give him more and more jip, he longs for a return to the Hellhaus and an end to the holiday.? He begins to leave things behind, symbolically?divesting himself of his past. But what kind of future is he walking towards?

I?m aware that I?ve spoken more specifically about The Lighthouse than Swimming Home.? That?s because it?s easier to get a grasp of the?former on first reading.? The picture builds slowly and the reader can engage with Futh?s tragic existence?(even if in real life, I suspect I would have no truck with his pitifulness). I?d look forward to a second reading of The Lighthouse,? just for the enhanced enjoyment that revisiting familiar key moments and symbols would bring.? Turns out that Swimming Home is a page-turner, but a slippery one, that requires, even demands, a second reading, to get to its heart.??I think, therefore, that both novels will fare well during the longlist rereadings of the Booker judges and I wouldn?t be at all surprised if both?figure on the shortlist next week.

Rollins' 3-run HR lifts Phillies past Reds

CINCINNATI (AP) - The rain was coming down. Johnny Cueto felt uncomfortable on the muddy mound. Jimmy Rollins wasn't going to give him a chance to get his calm back.

Rollins swung at the first pitch and hit a three-run homer during a cloudburst on Monday afternoon, sending Philadelphia to a 4-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds that featured the Phillies' young pitchers.

And Rollins, of course.

Cueto (17-7) was trying to become the major leagues' first 18-game winner. He had a perfect record in day games, going 11-0 in 13 afternoon starts this season. When rain fell hard in the fifth inning, it all came apart.

Rollins hit a first-pitch change-up that Cueto left over the plate.

"The mound was getting slippery," Cueto said, with a team trainer translating. "It was slippery the pitch before (Rollins' homer). When it rains you expect that. It's not an excuse."

Rollins' 17th homer made it 3-1 and gave him 1,999 career hits.

"He challenged Rollins and Rollins hurt him there," manager Charlie Manuel said.

John Mayberry Jr. added a solo homer off Cueto, who had allowed two in a game only one other time all season. It was only the fifth time in 28 starts that Cueto allowed as many as four runs.

Rookie right-hander Tyler Cloyd (1-1) got his first major league hit and win, figuring in the outcome a couple of ways.

With relatives and friends in the stands, the 25-year-old pitcher gave up four hits, including Jay Bruce's 30th homer, and struck out nine in seven innings. It was an improvement over his debut last week, when he gave up three runs in six innings of a 3-2 loss to the Mets.

"I was just trying to have a little better outing than my debut," Cloyd said. "Today I felt a lot calmer, a little more relaxed."

Jonathan Papelbon warmed up before the ninth - Manuel said he wanted to throw a little bit - but got a day off after allowing a three-run homer to Chipper Jones a few hours earlier that sent the Braves to an 8-7 win in Atlanta.

Papelbon had pitched four of the last six days, so Manuel was determined not to use him.

Instead, right-hander Phillippe Aumont came on to start the inning and gave up Bruce's two-out, RBI single. He retired Todd Frazier on a weak grounder to end the game and get his first major league save.

Aumont warmed up before the eighth and didn't expect to get a chance to try for a save.

"They called down and I thought sure it was (for) Pap," he said. "They told me. My knees kind of buckled. Then I kind of regrouped and did the same thing I've been doing at (Triple-A) Lehigh. Just keep it simple.

"There's definitely a little more adrenalin. I had plenty out there. It just went up a little more."

The Reds returned from a 5-1 road trip that gave them control of the NL Central. The next chore was to move Cueto one win closer to 20 victories, a mark no Cincinnati pitcher has reached since Danny Jackson in 1988.

Cueto allowed only a pair of singles through the first four innings. Steven Lerud and Cloyd had two-out singles in the fifth, when the remnant of Hurricane Isaac brought a short burst of rain. Cueto walked around the infield, trying to clear the mud from his cleats between batters.

Rollins hit the first pitch into the right field stands, ending Cueto's streak of no more than two runs allowed in any of his last four starts. The grounds crew came out and spread a drying material around the mound.

Mayberry extended his hitting streak to five games with his 14th homer an inning later.

Cloyd gave up Bruce's homer in the second inning, then allowed only one other runner to reach second base. Cloyd has taken the rotation spot of Vance Worley, out for the rest of the season with an elbow injury.

Notes: The Reds will promote RH Todd Redmond and RH Pedro Villarreal from Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday. ... Manager Dusty Baker said players getting September call-ups shouldn't expect to play much right away. "Right now, these kids here are here to help us," Baker said. "It's not like last year when they were here to see what they could do. If we do clinch this thing, then I could play them some." ... Only three Phillies have reached the 2,000-hit mark - Mike Schmidt (2,234), Richie Ashburn (2,217) and Ed Delahanty (2,207). ... Ryan Howard had a 13-pitch at-bat against Cueto in the fourth before grounding out.
